I remember an important strategy I used on the harder difficulty levels of the original Blood was to blow up the corpses of zombies and cultists who dropped an life essence in order to get a second life essence. This added a fun bit of strategy, since you had to reserve your explosives for this purpose, and you had to be quick with cultists since their bodies melt away.

However, I notice in Fresh Supply that you don't get the second life essence anymore.

Was this a "bug" that got fixed, either in Fresh Supply or a later version of the original game?

I wish they would put it back in!
I think you misremember that though. As far as I know it's pretty much not random which enemied drop a heart and which ones don't. You might get lucky and get a random heart drop but as far as I know it's pretty much set in stone

Yes, which enemies will drop a heart is predetermined.

The point I was making was that when an enemy dropped a heart and left a destructible corpse behind (zombies and cultists), it used to be possible to be able to blow up the corpse, which would then leave a second heart.

I guess this was a "bug" that got fixed though
