This is a flaw that Blood 2, for some reason, has with XP computers while in Direct 3D renderer mode on whatever resolution. When I launch Blood 2 with the display setting for the Direct 3D renderer, the menu flickers briefly into view, and is hidden under complete blackness. I end up navigating through the menu blind while in the setting, and can only see the menu through the software renderer. Is anyone familiar with this problem, and are there any updates or technical solutions that could fix it?

Go to the Blood 2 directory, Open up autoexec.cfg with notepad( located at C:\Windows\System32\ if notepad doesn't pop up on the list for you), and find "MaxFps".

If its not there just copy and paste this "MaxFps" "60" . If it is there then change the number to 60.

Hope this helps!

Alternatively, you could add it into defaults.cfg. For some reason Blood2 will overwrite autoexec, removing the maxfps setting unless you make autoexec a read-only file.
I tried both of your suggestions. You're right, DustyStyx. Blood 2 does overwrite the auto.exe. Unfortunately, the "MaxFps" "60" didn't work. It's a very stubborn problem, when it comes to the Direct 3D rendered setting. The odd thing is that while the red subtitle on the bottom left of the screen, which indicates which version of Blood 2 the game is, is visible, while the whole menu just flickers once and disappears in a black screen. It frustrating that I can only navigate through the menu on Soft Rend, and play the game with very fuzzy graphics. There must be another reason for this strange effect.

Try a lower number. I've always used 30 myself. You can also check the box in the Advanced settings (from the initial Blood 2 launch menu) to disable DX6 rendering, and polygap fill.
Unfortunately, I tried that as well, and it still doesn't work. It's a stubborn problem, for sure.
I had same problem on a Dell D505 running XP
At the Black menu open the console with the tilde key ~
type maxfps 50 hit enter, this worked for me !
you may need lower 40 or 30 but 50 is a good start.
