Im from the very OLD school... i have my own key config on shooters... i "walk" with the right button, and i do a variation of "quake" controls moving them to the keypad... i do strafe left and right with keypad 1 and 2, and i walk back with the keypad 3, jump with the 6, crouch with the dot :) i played even online games like this being really good!

I never liked the AWSD :(

The keys may be to far spread out to be effective for some. I think that's why WASD has always been the norm. It's basically a circle of buttons when you include the other buttons around it. I have heard of some people using your method though. To each his own.

I've read a few times that there are some who use ESDF instead of WASD as it gives even more surrounding keys. So, I just did a Google search for ESDF and this came up top:

http://use-esdf.org/

:)

EDIT: Just thought I'd point out that I've never actually used ESDF. I first started FPS playing with the cursor keys, old style, but then moved over to WASD and preferred that so much that I stuck with it. I do wonder if ESDF would be even better but I don't know if I could break the habit of WASD now.

I'm in the same boat. Tho, I think I would still prefer keyboard if my LAN group didn't beat the living shit out of me when they all switched over to Keyboard+Mouse when Half-life came out.

I did try ESDF early on, but I always found it easier to park on WASD. I think it has to do with the way the QWERTY keyboard is laid out. The left hand generally parks on home-row and says where it should, whereas the right hand gets to wander all over the place with keyboard commands, number-pad and mouse movement.

Granted, that logic should lend to the ESDF argument, but meh... that's why they invented dedicated FPS keyboards right? Where you only have WASD cluster and a few extra keys, strategically placed in a ring around it.

I prefer WASD because I use my thumb to hit the C key for crouch and the Spacebar for jump so it's so much more easier for me that way. Plus I can hit V and B with ease too using my thumb.

Though ESDF usage would mean you'd have V for crouch, "B and N" instead of "V and B", still give you access to the Spacebar, plus you'd have C, X, Z, \ and Shift and Alt in easy reach beneath the movement keys, which is one additional key to the WASD usage.

I really can see how some gamers use ESDF, but as I've used WASD for many years I really doubt I could break away from it (I have so many saved config files in different games that are all WASD based).
Thank Mohilaka.I was starting to get frustrated trying to set up the key bindings. I didn't see U for mouse aiming, so that made a huge difference.
