The multiplayer servers are working. You have to remove patch6_data.pak from data folder to get option to play online.

EDIT: removing patch6_data.pak only enables nival.net option in the multiplayer menu. I can join the servers and chat with players, but I can't join any game. The game probally still declares, it is version 1.6
