See title. I downloaded the game on release and started playing. Saw that an update had downloaded, quickly exited the game, let Galaxy run the update, got back in the game and now my save is gone.

Devs, seriously, what the hell?

Guess I have to deactivate auto-updates for this game so I can make manual backups of my saves in case they get deleted.

This should not be a thing.

EDIT: After poking around a bit, what seems to have happened is that the game didn't actually sync the save before the update. So when the update was installed, it then proceeded to load the saves from the Galaxy cloud, i.e. an empty folder, which it then set as the save path.

If this happens to you, you might be able to restore your progress by going to

Windows/Users/YOUR_USER_NAME/AppData/LocalLow/TheGameKitchen/Blasphemous

and copying the file savegame_0.save as well as the folder savegame_0 into the folder GOGUser_XXX. (This is assuming you had your save in slot 1).

After restarting the game, your progress should show up again (and hopefully sync to the cloud).

Still, this is absolutely not acceptable for a non-beta release. Please make sure you don't delete your users' progress in the future.

I found the same problem but with another scenario: the GOGUser_XXX folder had the saves inside, but it still refused to see them ingame. Outside, in the savegames folder, there was just a single empty "savegame_1" empty folder. I just managed to get the game to see the saves again by copying the contents of the GOGUser folder in the Savegames folder, however the game keeps saving them to the GOGUser folder, so if you want to see the updated file you should overwrite the local file in Savegames with the one in GOGUser.

edit: I strangely found that by activating the cloud sync again it sees the saved files correctly, but it seems it takes some time to load them so you should wait before cliking on the "Pilgrimage" in the main menu to give the game the time to load them. It is completely retarted, but it seems to work for now.

Seems this is what happened to me.

And now I don't know what happened that my controller doesn't work with the game anymore. :$ (It's not Steam. I've restarted with Steam deactivated.)

I've tried reinstalling... Any ideas of what can I do?

It just deleted all my savefiles. And to make it even weirder, it doesn't even allow me to start new game (once in pilgrimage menu, neither esc nor enter are not registered, forcing me to hard shurtdown the game.

That being said, I am highly disturbed by fact there's no actual "exit game" button once on pilgrimage.

To ease your burden and help you quit the game properly, hit Back, X, exit to main menu. On a gamepad that is... and on the KB:

Thank!

But then again, there's no point if I can't start a new game either. Not only are all saves gone, but also it doesn't respond to my efforts to start a game anew.

O! That sounds terrible, bro!

Have you tried to look for your saves in ../appdata/locallow/thegamekitchen/blasphemous ? There are different saves for galaxy version of the game and for standalone (offline installer) - check details of the icon you are launching the game with (either it points to galaxy, or directly to game exe). Are you using admin windows account (or running the game as administrator)? Is your game installed in program files directory? Are you using cloud saves in galaxy? Have you tried to repair your game files via galaxy?

These are just the first things that came to my mind. I hope you get it sorted. There were a couple of people who got problems with saves and wrote about it here.

The exit game option is on the map screen. Hit M, followed by X, then select exit to menu.

I am having the same issues with the saves. I have been playing the game with out Galaxy. At one point it would not save beyond a specific save point. So, twice now I had my progress lost. However, when I started it up via Galaxy the progress was there. I think what has happened is when I updated the game via Galaxy it synced the saves and now has separated the two different plays. But for some reason when I play directly from the exe with out galaxy running it only recognizes the Galaxy save and appears that progress is lost....

so essentially I have to use Galaxy right now.

I have tried as the first poster said and moved the files into GOG userXXXX one time but it made no difference.

I will check and see if the exe I am using is associated with Galaxy......but it is not a short cut. I have not encountered a situation like this before.

One solution might be to disable cloud saves for the game before updating it via galaxy or disable auto updates and update the game via manual patches

I found the solution.

The save files in GOGuser are for Galaxy. The ones in the save folder in Appdata are for stand alone play. If you are having a conflict between the two copy the files from GOGuser and over write the ones in the appdata saves folder. (I backed them up just in case)

Now when I play directly from the exe with out Galaxy running it shows my save state progression correctly.
From a GOG staff member in another thread here. Which just confirms everything.

"Please make sure you don't have the game installed anywhere in the Program Files directory or a subdirectory of Program Files. The Program Files directory is somewhat protected by Windows so any game that is installed in Program Files can have problems with doing basic things like writing to your save :)

Also, please note that for the time being the game uses a different save file when you're playing with the Galaxy client enabled and when you're playing without it enabled. So if you play the game with the Galaxy client enabled and then decide to play it without the client enabled or running in the background then you might experience an issue where you don't see your game."

It's from a gog staff member, not from the developer.

But yeah, the save folders are a mess.

Dude thank you so much for this! You just saved me like 20 hours of gameplay because gog synced the savegame when it was 60 hours and I was already 80 hours in! I just backed up everything in the Blasphemous folder in the AppData folder and then replaced the savegames.
