First of all, it's exciting that this game got restored so people can play it on gog.com. However, after I gifted it to my husband who's hearing, I was very curious to check to see if it had subtitles. I'm in a community for deaf gamers and we all always share to each other on how accessible games are. I shared with them that this game has no subtitles. I'm very disappointed that it got restored as is with no thought of adding subtiitles.

I would like to request that Blade Runner have subtitles added so that deaf gamers who cannot hear can enjoy the game just as equally as hearing gamers. It would be so awesome and will make Bladerunner deaf fans really happy.

Thank you!

Blade Runner Subtitles (English, French, Subtitles AddOn) (556K .zip mirrorlist sha256) - Requires ScummVM 2.1.0

the original does not have subtitles

you can add them....
but its not the requirement of GOG to change the game for you
GOG gives you exactly the same game you remember when it was released.

The file you can download from the link above (a zip file) contains readme.txt that tells you what you need to do. If you run into trouble, let us know (or the good people of the ScummVM community) and someone will help.

I've already enabled the subs in my game, and so far they run perfectly fine without fiddling around, but then I'm using a separate ScummVM install and not the "as-is" GOG installation, so try it out and see what happens.

Thanks! I shall pass this along to my deaf gamer pals!
GOG release has the subtitles option enabled by default so it should suffice to just drop the SUBTITLES.MIX file (from the zip available at the scummVM site) in the folder where Blade Runner is installed.

This should be included by default honestly, some of the dialogue drops in volume out of nowhere and can be difficult to understand.

I know what you mean, but I don't think it should be included because it's a user created mod and not part of the original game.

Also, it will be possibly changing multiple times in the future which would make continuity difficult for GoG.

Once the file is added, it can be disabled/enabled within the game menu, so I guess it could be included after all. But either way, the solution was simple enough finding from Google, it's just too bad the subtitles stay at the bottom of the screen, but it totally improves my experience as a non-english native speaker.

How do you mean "bad"?

At some point I plan to implement some extensions to the subtitles system (this is also WIP but was put on hold for about a year now, and I had no time to revisit it). So if there are suggestions for improvements feel free to post them for consideration.

Current WIP and plans include:
- A dropdown selection to pick UI & subtitles text language (audio cannot be changed)
- Support for translations that are trickier than for the Latin based languages via developer tools and expansions to the subtitles system. Such target languages are eg. Greek, Chinese, Hebrew etc.
- Support optional secondary subtitles (mainly for the few instances of Developer Commentary (when restored), and *perhaps* for ambient sounds (sounds like the blimp announcements about the Colonies, not the random dispatch messages).

By the way, the link for the subtitles has been slightly updated. The current correct link is:
https://www.scummvm.org/games/#addons-bladerunner
Go to: downloads.scummvm.org/frs/extras/Blade%20Runner/
You will see all versions of the subtitles that have been released so far and the latest v6 which includes French, Spanish and English translations.
