Hitting the shield damages me and I can't break it. He is also hard to hit. Any advice on how to beat this guy?

You need to keep hammering that shield - it will break eventually. Special moves are a help here, if you can bring them off. Then get far enough away from him so he transports himself behind you - when he does continually do the back slash move to take him down (default keys are back, left, right all pressed at same time).

He can be a pain if you are underpowered - make sure you use your strongest weapon and a power potion, if you have one.

The easiest way is with power potion and then spam power combos. The other way is the not easy way. Both are doable.
