Hi there,

I've enjoyed the first and the second game in the series. There is an issue though that troubles me and makes it impossible to finish the 2nd game. Spoiler ahead:
The inventory is overall glitchy - i.e. one has trouble unselecting an already selected item. However at the end of the game (at least in all the saves I have) I cannot select an item. The Couontess is strangling me and I have no way of selecting a cigarette or any other item. After clicking on anything the cursor changes to a cock and then reverts to an arrow again.

I have a save from before that as well and I am unable to select an item as well - Lauren just reads the item's description as if I've right-clicked. When I start the game from scratch I can select an item though, so this is really weird.
Help!

Lauren is being strangled at the moment, isn't she? It might be a bit hard for her to pull anything out right now. Maybe if she could catch her breath, she'd be better able to fight back...

If that's not it, reply again with more details.

As I've said - I have a save before opening the door as well and left-clicking an item in an inventory acts just like right-clicking it/ The cursor doesn't change it's shape to an object - Lauren simply reads the description of the item / opens the newspaper with possible cases etc.

I assume your clue means that there is a specific moment when you can use the cigarette - I haven't noticed that to be honest, but I have replayed door opening sequence multiple times and there is no way to use the cigarette before the Countess strangles me since the cursor is busy.
Oh you can't use the cigarette before the Countess starts to choke you. After all, that's assault and quite illegal. No, once she starts strangling Lauren you need to find some way to distract her. Too bad Lauren is alone in her apartment.

Hah, I see what you did there ;)

[More spoilers ahead]
I believe, however, that you are wrong. I cannot select anything in my inventory in the save where the women is still outside the door. I have even checked a video walkthrough and it doesn't seem as you need to use Joey as distraction: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZwtdxbsmCg#t=4m15s

I have tried switching to him though and all he says is "Damn it, I can't do anything". There is no inventory icon to switch between them as well. I believe this really is a bug :)

Hm. This same thing happened in an earrrly build of the game, when we made it five years ago! Try right-clicking on a non-hotspot area before you move up to the inventory and click on the cigarette. That might fix it.

That did the trick, thanks! Are we having an earrrly build of the game here on GOG? ;)
BTW the "bug" must be somehow stored in a savegame :) Item selection is overall glitchy in this otherwise excellent game :)

I dunno! Someone encountered the bug when I first launched it. I thought I fixed it, and nobody has reported it since, so I marked it as done! It must be something very specific that triggers it. If someone else finds this bug, I'll try and get more details!

Ok. Reach me whenever you feel like working on this. I know this has happened to me more than once, but in this situation I've had little options so I didn't have chance to accidentally right-click on non-hotspot I guess :)

This is a very low priority if no one else encounters this though...
FYI, I just encountered the same problem, and I'm playing the Steam version. I did a google search for the problem and came here.

The right-click on another hotspot trick worked for me as well.

If you need another patsy to track down the bug, let me know. I have a save file with Lauren at the balcony just before The Countess arrives.

Great series so far, BTW! I've had them for a while from an indie game bundle, but only decided to play them now. I really enjoyed these first two, and am looking forward to playing Convergence soon. At this rate, it's pretty likely I'll jump straight in and grab the latest one at full price once I finish Convergence. Thanks for the good times, and congratulations on your success.
I too encountered this issue when I was playing through my second time with commentary track on. I suppose I used the same fix though I figured it out just by clicking around over and over and over again. Don't have a save file but just figured adding another voice to the bunch couldn't hurt.

I get the bug deterministically by picking an item and switching to Joey before releasing it.
The right clicking on an empty space trick works, though.
