Okay, so I downloaded the bundle using the GOG downloader, no problems.

But whenever I try to open any of the episodes I get this message:

---

An error has occurred. Please contact the game author for support, as this is likely to be a scripting error and not a bug in AGS.
(ACI version 3.21.1115)

in "Achievements.asc", line 134
from "Achievements.asc", line 63

Error: Error running function 'game_start':
Error: Null pointer referenced.

I have some experience of AGS (not much using it, but I've played enough games using the engine to solve some of the regular problems) but I have yet to encounter this sort of problem. Anyone else in a similar seat, or who may know a way to work around this?

Thanks in advance!

Hmm. This only happens on certain win 7 computers when you install to the "program files" directory. If you have that problem and you install it anywhere else, it will work fine.

well it might be because I'm running windows 7 x64. I just tried using compatibility mode for xp sp3 and now I can boot the first game

This problem occurs because on some computers the "Program Files" directory has extra security, and the game places the savegame files in the same directory as the game. So if you installed the game to "Program Files" and your computer has this security, it won't run. This wasn't an issue back in the XP days when I first made these games!

This is something I probably should fix! Look for an update soon.

Ok, that seems to have been it.

I too, use W7 64 bit. I changed the compatibility and now it works okay.

Should have tried that sooner.

My bad.
What I have done is: Right click -> Run as administrator. Especially if you installed it in program files.

Works like a charm that way.

Had the same problem (in Windows 7) but Administrator mode fixed it for me too -- with many game problems from GOG that almost always fixes it.

BTW, absolutely AWESOME first game - I've played hundreds of games over the years and this is seriously one of my top 5 most favorites. Can't wait to get started on 2, 3 and 4 :)

I agree. Finished it yesterday and loved the story. It set's a good atmosphere, has believeable characters and has a good sense of spookiness and humor.
You don't need to run GOG games as admin, you can just fix the permissions on the folder. Make sure "users" has full control and then apply to all folders underneath.

I'm not sure why GOG hasn't fixed this yet in all their games. Some games can't even write their config files because of this

Just like to say thanks; I had the same problem and now the game works for me as well.
