Yo, devs, please update the game to 1.9. Version 1.7, which is what you have on GOG, doesn't really work on macOS (gamepad support not functional). Supposedly 1.9 fixes this.
I actually wrote to them about this a short time ago and got this reply today:

Hello, unfortunately, we have a big problem with moving version up on GOG.com, since the engine GameMaker Studio 1.4 is deprecated now and BLACKHOLE is still not working with GameMaker Studio 2, we have big problems to patch our game.

But we are still working on it. It's a long process where Engine developer needs to adjust a things for us, which is not easy by their words.

I am really sorry for this inconvience, but it's not our intention.

GOG.com have all the DLC though. And the version 1.9 on Steam is basically the same as GOG.com 1.7 ... there are few known issues and bugs though. But we are using different version scheme between Steam and GOG, so that's why it's little confusing.

Thank you for understanding,
____

Make of that what you will.
Hmm, well, at least that's a reply. They should have used a better engine, if it's really GameMaker causing these problems.

Even then, I'm not sure what's stopping them from keeping using 1.4 for the time being. It's not like it magically ceases working just because the developer has deprecated it.
Yeah, I wondered about that, but then I assumed something with GOG integration requires a newer GameMaker. Or something. Maybe. Weird that they'd use different version numbering between GOG and Steam, but in any case, 1.7 on GOG definitely does not have working gamepad support regardless.

We are not using GMS 1.4, but special version provided by YoYo during the development, because they did some integrations which are not available to everyone. Right now, we are unable to export game with newest SDK's, because they are deprecated. Only solution would be to install our computer to the same point and version of the software exactly one year back. That's absolutely insane just for "change" number in our menu - because that's the only thing which are bothering people. The Steam and GOG.com are almost the same, with a few exceptions - like integration of GOG Galaxy instead of Steam API.

GOG version of 1.7 have working gamepad support - all xinput, all directinput, on linux: xpad and even on MacOS.

EDIT: We are working on new version of BLACKHOLE - in which we hope we will resolve everything once and for all. But guys, it's out for three years already. We did our best. We are small indie studio - we have to direct our energy very specificaly based upon the feedback as much as we can, but some things isn't just about "click here to deploy new version" ...

Maybe this is a specific problem on your computer. Now the dev is here, perhaps you can get some clues as to why it's not working?

Sadly not. Gamepad input simply does not register at all, no matter what I do. All other games that have gamepad support on macOS work correctly, so it's not an issue with my computer. Especially considering that Hyper Light Drifter, also made with GameMaker Studio, does have working gamepad support. My guess is that it's something to do with the version they're using. So whatever it is, use that one, and it will magically fix everything. ;) (Yes, I'm aware it's not that simple.)

I don't really care about version numbers or anything. I just think having different numbers on GOG and Steam has created some confusion. If I had known 1.7 on GOG is basically 1.9, I wouldn't have started this topic. I mean, there's still a problem, but it's apparently not what I thought.

We are on it to resolve this problem once and for all. We are working on it. Please, bear with us.
Good news. We are close to delivering new BLACKHOLE 1.10 version on GOG.

It should help also with gamepad support - which is weird, because the version of Blackhole we have on GOG right now supports gamepad's without any problems (I am playing the MacOS - GOG version right now from galaxy with Xbox One Controller without any issue)... So I am worried that if we are unable to replicate issue, we can't help.

But regarding everything else, you will get what you wanted from the start. Unified versions across: Steam, GOG, DRM-FREE.

BLACKHOLE 1.10 will be available within few hours / days from now. We are working on deployment this upcoming week.

I'm hoping that's the case. I was just trying to run Blackhole, but nothing actually loaded

What do you mean? The Blackhole right now on GOG is fully playable. :)
I'm also having trouble getting my gamepad to work with this game. I'm using an Xbox controller on macOS Sierra with the 360controller driver. I've tried both disabling the driver and the "Pretend to be an Xbox 360 Controller" option but it simply won't register. Anyway, it's not a huge issue since I could just play through Bootcamp but I thought I'd mention it.

BLACKHOLE has been updated to 1.10 here on GOG.com.
Thank you for your patience with us.
