I know there are multiple threads about issues with this game's graphics, and I apologize for starting another, but I'm having lots of problems, and I'm not very savvy about these things.
I tried playing yesterday. Before starting the game, I turned the resolution to maximum, and turned on anti-aliasing and high-quality shadows. It ran at the proper speed, but there was a lot of flashing and flickering, and the status indicators in the upper left-hand corner were a bit glitched. I realized that the game didn't support widescreen, so I quit in order to change the aspect ratio, only to find that I no longer had the option, as the drop-down menu for resolution in the launcher had gone blank.
I fiddled with the other settings to try to stop the flickering, but when I tried running the game again, the graphics were so choppy and slow that the video of the opening cutscene ran minutes longer than the audio. I continued fiddling, and at some point, the option to change the resolution came back, briefly. I turned it down to 800 x 600, but that did nothing to help the performance. I did manage, somehow, to stop the graphics from running too slow; now they run too fast, instead.
The strange thing is, I had tested the game out for about half an hour back when I bought it, one year ago, and I don't recall any of these problems. The only change I've made to my PC since was to replace the hard drive with a solid-state drive, so even though my hardware isn't very good, I don't think it's the problem.
Are these problems that can even be fixed by the settings? I've seen various recommendations to manually edit .ini files or replace .dll files, but I'm wary about changing things at that level.
