So I already have the Steam version of this game which I can't get to run. Well, I can, but the settings application doesn't let me select a resolution and keeps telling me my drivers are outdated.

Does the GoG version fix this stuff? And if so, can I just buy the GoG version and drop the two executables into the Steam version's folder and run it, or has GoG made changes to other files too?

1. You'll always get the box telling you that your drivers are outdated, but it's irrelevant and can be ignored.

2. I had no difficulty changing the resolution or any of the other options, though I did have to turn off HW Vertex Processing to avoid a bunch of graphical glitches.

3. I have no idea if the GOG executable would work in a Steam install, but I'm leaning towards "no." The GOG version uses a wrapper for the executable to fix compatibility issues, and I doubt there would be any way to integrate that wrapper into Steam for launching the game. Without that wrapper, you might be no better off than before. You can still add the full GOG install to your library as a non-Steam game, but it won't have full Steam integration.

I guess my only issue is the resolution thing then. I can't for the life of my to get the settings application to let me select one. It just shows a blank drop down and the refresh rate option doesn't even appear. Running it in compatibility mode just makes it crash as soon as I start it.

I don't want to buy this version though if it's just going to do the same thing.

Well other than the HW Vertex thing, I've had zero bugs/glitches/difficulties with the GOG version of the game or with the setup program. It's possible that the GOG version might fix your issues, but it's also possible that it's caused by some conflict with your graphics drivers.

Have you checked the Steam forums to see if anyone else had the resolution issue?

I think I'll stick with the PS3 remaster for now. I already own three different versions of this game - the PS3 remaster, Steam and the original disc version - and I'm hesitant to own it four times unless I'm absolutely sure it will work. The only real reason I wanted to play the PC version was for the anisotropic filter anyway. Considering the age of the game, I think they could have squeezed that out of the PS3, but ah well.

I used to have mega problems with the Steam version of BG&E. I could get it to load, but often the textures would be messed up and the sound would never sync up right, and usually it would crash a few minutes in. I was on Windows 7, quad-core AMD with a Radeon HD5870 machine at the time. I bought the GOG version just out of a curiosity, and by jove the wrapper they put on the game fixed all my problems. It literally booted without issues. I had the same exact thing happen with Commandos, and after these two experiences I pledged to never buy a game on Steam again if I could get it on GOG.

I would say go for it. Hell, maybe you will get lucky and it'll be a daily deal over the next few weeks.
