green_abobo: was the whole premise of pre ordering i thought?
Well, originally preordering comes from the bygone era when games were still sold in physical boxes, which had to be produced in advance and cost quite a bit. If a publisher produced to few boxes (which happened), it could happen that one went to a store on release day only to learn that all boxes had already been sold, and that you'd have to wait until more boxes were produced before being able to play. If the publisher produced way too many boxes, they went the way of Atari.
(The boxes also contained think paper manuals, often hundreds of pages, containing information about how to play the game, the universe the game was set in, tips and tricks, and general awesome stuff. Sadly this can nowadays be considered almost lostech... I need to find my MechCommander I manual)
Over time the need to preorder to ensure you got the game on release-day disappeared for buyers, but while companies didn't need to produce boxes anymore, game production is still a long drawn-out process with lots of costs during production and without preorders earnings only at/after release, so in order to get pre-orders they started to add extras when you pre-ordered. Some of which were fun, others... less so (pre-order and get something that will give you a definite edge in this PvP game).
So nowadays, there are probably 3 primary reasons to pre-order:
-You want that bonus content
-You want to pre-load (when and where it is available)
-You want to support the studio (only relevant for smaller studios)
Of course, one should first be sure if you want the game sight unseen :)
