heater19: I agree with you, it would be better if it was similar to the old Mechcommander 2 system where you're limited by the amount of tonnage you can bring to the battlefield, rather the amount of mechs.
I completely agree with you. Coming from a MechCommander 2 background, I'm finding myself wishing this game was more MechCommandery and less table topy

Plus, a single mission can take 45-60 minutes, where as MechCommander took under 30 minutes.

aegiskleais: After the 1.1 Patch, 5-skull missions are an absolute impossibility now. The increased stability of assaults and heavies makes knocking them over more rare, thus, called shot resources gets depleted too quickly. Couple that with AI that just targets the closest means if you every get in to try for a rear armor alpha, you're decimated by overwhelming focus fire.

It's one think to expect a challenge, but it seems the max tonnage I can drop with is about 350T. And by the time my squad is wiped, they had destroyed 800T and there were still another 150T of enemies on the screen in new health.

I firmly believe that with those limitations in place, the developers want you to "do what damage you can and then flee" the battle. And "forced failure" is among one of my most hated game mechanics. Right next to quick time events. You don't EVER force the player into a no-win situation.
I completely agree wiith you. One thing I started doing was bringing 2 mechs with over 1,000 LRMs and an LRM-20 with extra stability damage. Then I breach shoot them one at a time. From behind a hill.

Sometimes the AI saunters into my killing zone. Sometimes, they just mill at the base of the hill. Once I'm down to like 4, I can jump my other 2 mechs and try to alpha strike them on the side torsos. It's super annoying.

Last night I played a 4.5 skull mission and the enemy was: King Crab, 2 Victors, and a Demolisher. The reinforcements where 2 Highlanders, and 2 King Crabs. Took me over an hour and a half to kill them all, but, I took almost no damage
What really turned my crank was the extended mission where you get the Highlander 732. Wouldn't it been reasonable to send more warriors down to retreive more of the Star League era mechs? Then go after the dropship that had the arty on it...

I just had one where I had 4 med mech and 12 targets to shoot at spyders lucust and tanks. They were so evasive you kept missing and you had to engage them all or they woudl go for the buildings you had to protect. I hated that mission even though it was successful.

I would rather contend with tonnage limits rather than the 4 mech limit. 8 50 ton mechs instead of 4 100 ton mechs.

I always keep my lance together and always make sure one mech is a long range missile boat. Do not use large missile racks though, the heat build up is too much for sustained use and they waste a lot of ammo on kill shots to heavily damaged mechs. Instead use 5 or 10 missile racks (based on tonnage and space available) and get at least 4 racks if you can on the mech. Then make sure it targets all visible enemy mechs with at least one rack each, the accumulated stability damage this can cause will help greatly when you face the large 80-100 ton mechs.

The ballistic weapons on your front line mechs (try to make sure each has at least one ballistic weapon) will add to the stability damage and you should be knocking down one or two mechs each turn late game with your high skilled gunners. I kill the large mechs as much by pilot injuries caused when they get knocked down as I do by destroying their mechs outright. And because you don't have to chew through all their armor, this is a faster method of kills for the most part.

This only works if you let them come to you though as you need bulwark on your front three mechs (hide the missile boat well to the rear, so you can strip half or more of its armor to stuff it with more reloads) to withstand the incoming damage from 2-3 times as many mechs as you have.

With this strategy I rarely lose a fight anymore.
Just failed a mission with 12 agains 4 to protect the buildings. I hate that they come from three sides and destroy a building even before the third round. You can't possibly tag all the enemies before they get a bulding and they were heavy and medium mechs too. My mechs survived but mission failed and I was only able to destroy 1 enemy mech becuause I was trying to tag each enemy mech. Morale (now resolve) remained low so I couldn't even do a precision shot. Would really like the option to bring another lance like Mech Commander.
