When I try to play Battle Realms, I get the error message, "Could not initialize display mode" and the game fails to launch.

My current display is 1024x600 (32bit color).

Any suggestions?

Nevermind. I just went into the configuration file and set it to display 800x600. Now it works.

Anyway, the default resolution is 1024 x 768, and your monitor was not able to handle the 768 px high. This was the problem. You solved it by setting the resolution to your monitor's capabilities.

As for a note, the game only can handle 4:3 resolutions. You can set it to 16:9 or any other, but the game will reconfigure it during launch and will be displayed in 4:3. The only exception is the 5:4 resolutions. Those can be used, but the screen will be stretched without keeping the aspect ratio.

You can't mark one of your own posts as the solution. I would have that you would know this by now.
Lol, I don't know that.

Have you tried this one?

Might be related.

If not, hopefully others could answer you or you solve it eventually.

As far as I know this game supports only 4:3 resolutions. My card switch video mode automatically to match this, maybe you have to do the same manually.

Try changing depth in Battle_Realms.ini from 16 to 32. These problems occur because of the modern hardware, and, mostly, because of the videocard.

Try DxWind program that will let you use windowed mode/ Windowed modes are usually less troublesome, and making it windowed would deny the display problem. Instructions here.
i dont know...

tried this too but didnt work...

thx for help guys.

No problem. Most of the cases either the old games are too weak or the modern systems are too complex for stable running. It can't be helped sadly. If you're lucky enough the hardware knows what to do, otherwise, like me, have to look for solutions but there is no guarantee. Old games are old and you have to be a programer to think out something.

Just bought the game, and I've got the same error message:

Could not find supported display mode.

I tried
1024x768 32
1024x768 16
800x600 32
800x600 16

Nothing is working for me!
Ok, my problem was another. Multimonitor... i've just deactivated the second one :)

What's your: resolution, videocard, videocard manager settings (if anything's changed) and DX components (via dxdiag)? Can you please provide this info, so I, perhaps, can get to the core of the problem (I know you fixed it but still)?

How to check DX components: Select the Start button and type dxdiag in the search box, then press Enter. Go to the screen tab and tell me about the last 3 accelerations. They all should work.

I had a guy with the same problem, who had all those unavailable, and that, I suspected, might've been the cause of the problem. I believe it's all mostly in the screen resolution and how the game reacts to it.
