I just had this problem, and I googled for it. Just in case somebody else gets this problem, you need to turn off your second monitor and then it works like a charm.
If somebody has an Idea to get around this (and also how to play it in windowed mode) it would be highly appreciated.
You can try this for windowed mode - http://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/

Is there a good tutorial that explains what EVERY option does? I can only find stuff where some options are explained.

hit the windows key + P and disable the second + third monitors if you are using multiple screens and have only 1 up and the game will run. It did for me but crashed when I was playing a skirmish.
I shouldn't have to disable my other monitors to play this game. I thought the whole point of GOG was that they took the old games and fixed them to run on modern machines? If I wanted to deal with all this trouble running it I could have just dug out my old disc and installed it from there.

This needs to be fixed.
I can confirm this, you have to completly turn off additional Monitors to start the game. On german Win7.

Maybe GOG could mod the game-settings a little bit. Would be simpler than edit the ini for better Resolutions etc.

I couldn't agree more. If it hadn't been for the GOG forum answering this question then I wouldn't have been able to play this game at all and, if the game hadn't been given away free by GOG, would have been seeking a refund.

This is almost as bad as Nexus: The Jupiter Incident's glitch/oversight on GOG where multiplayer won't work unless you install the game to a special directory that is hard-coded into the crack in GOG's version ("c:\nexus"), a directory that is not the GOG directory :(
i disabled all my other monitors and i have the same issue... Cant find any Solution.

My first monitor 144hz 1920x1080 and the other 60hz 1920x1080.
I"m on Win 10 and I have the same problem.
I am so glad that this forum exists, thank you!
