When I click on "Play" from GoG, I get a screen asking me to select from 4 options, the first of which is Battle Isle. When I do that, I get an intro video, followed by the credits. The credits just keep repeating. No key press or mouse click will stop them. How do I start the game? The other options from that initial screen are to load data disks or exit. Loadng the data disks doesn't do anything--I wind up looking at the GoG application again.

How do I get to the game's main menu?

Press the space bar, that will then present you with the menu.

Something to remember, the original developers did not use "normal keyboard" functions to find out what was pressed, the addressed the keyboard directly and their keyboards were German so often, when you need to press "Y", it doesn't respond, you need to press the "Z" as that is where the "Y" is on the German keyboard.
