My desktop graphics card only has 256 MB of RAM and the game requires 512 MB. Would I still be able to play this or would my card really perform too poorly?

Old laptop, C2D 2GHz + GF 9300m with 256MB. 1280x800, settings high, AA turned off. No problems, works like a charm.
edit: Dont know how it will work with large population (2000+), bought game few days ago :-)
