This game looks fun, and it's something thats right up my alley. But I worry about paying $20 for a game game that I'll binge play for a night or 2 and then never play again. Are there missions, goals, etc? Are there different maps, environments, building tech trees, building designs, politics, factions? I know theres no combat and thats fine by me. How does this compare to something like the guild series or anno? I feel like I'll play what looks like a fun sandbox and then get bored after 8-10 hours of gameplay.

I've only begun playing it. The way I see it, there are neither missions nor factions, but you can make your subsequent playthroughs more difficult by enabling disasters or starting in harsher environments (worse climate, less space). No tech trees either; all the buildings are available from the very start. So the replayability lies mostly in the challenge. There's also talk of some modding tools coming soon, so there might be some worthwhile mods in a few montsh, although they can't add anything significantly different to the core game.

I agree, the price is a bit too steep, but I bought the game just because it's a great mix of some survival games and city builder games like the Anno series, which I dislike because tends to get bloated as your city grows, and I like managing smaller communities.

Haven't played it...

One 'Let's Play' showed Achievements, so that might be considered to take the place of missions or scenarios.
well, after messing around with it for a while last night, I worked out exacly what provides variation, map seed, valley or mountain and map size, all of the other options just affect gameplay. so basically every map seed, like 1, can generate 6 different maps on it's own, some can be really easy, others very difficult, some encoraging one strategy and some another. I don't know how many map seeds there are total, but I just started my first hard town on map seed 719681623 valley large and I am absolutely in love with it so much flat land. also, as someone else mentioned, the acheivements are there for people who need a defined goal, and the first one is just to get to 300 population O.o
Thanks a lot everyone! This really gave me a good bit of insight to the game. While I find it very intriguing, I'll hold off until it goes on sale.
I most definitely am not bored, after 15+ hours.

I can see some feeling bored after filling up a Large map with a 800 population town, but that's going to take most people a long long time. And I very much like the "restart on a new seed-map" to try new approaches and have more land-config. challenges. Plus there will be a mod-kit released later - although it won't let you do anything super-major to the game (like add combat...).

Anyway, it's a survival building game. The survival part can be quite challenging, especially in the long term. It's awesome.
I've been playing for a good 20+ hours and am still only at population around 100.
Hell a tornado wiped 2/3rds of my population in one shot.

So getting to a huge population will take a long time.. That and the game does have achievements to work towards to.

Here's a picture of mine (Aka MonkeyVille)

Now dance my little monkeys! Dance!
