I play latest version with 1 mod (German translation). Problem: I built a piece (about 15 squares) of simple road in grass/wood terrain. After a while, I decided that I do not need it and deleted it (it was removed). A few ingame years later, I wanted to build houses on that spot, but the game still showed up the deleted road in red, so I was not able to build anything on it.
I tried to re-build the road, than delete it; build a stone road and delete it; but nothing worked.
Any ideas what i can do about this bug?

Thanks.
As far as I was able to find back when I first ran into it, there's nothing to be done except load an older save from before it happened.

I think it was something to do about an interaction between the road and a tree being in the path? I don't quite recall now.

After a lot more reading and trying, I found this solution:
- I built a new dirt road over the read marked squares, making sure it is connected to an existing road
- I drew a box over the newly built road, bigger and longer than the road itself, using 'Remove Structures', then 'Remove Resources'; I made sure that there was at least 1 resource (tree) to remove
- I drew a box (s.o.) using 'Remove Roads'
-> this time the new road and the red markers from the old road have been removed and I could build in that area.

However, when I tried to find out which of these steps would be really necessary, my tests all failed. Maybe the program needs some time to register what has been done.
But it worked when I needed it... :)

Neat! I'm glad that there is some sort of solution to deal with the bug. Maybe it isn't just the commands, but having them carried out by a citizen? That might account for any delay you were seeing during testing.
After loading a saved game containing a road waiting to be built, do not cancel (remove) the road, or you'll get a problem like this. That is the bug I know. The answer is to let the road be completed, then remove it (make a worker dig it up).

I have never had any problems placing a road, then removing it before it is built, all within an uninterrupted game session.

EDIT
One "feature" really annoys me: placing a road through moderately uneven terrain can turn adjoining tiles from green-for-building to red-for-building (as the road lowers the tiles it is on). The risk at the foot of a mountain can at least be foreseen (and provided for by flattening the ground all around first, eg by making small stockpiles), but it can happen elsewhere too. Even worse, a resource (eg a tree) on the steepened spot can hide the problem until the resource unspawns or is harvested.
