Hi,

I played the Avernum series and enjoyed the play-style and found Balrum on Steam.
Being a Gog customer I bought the game here and found that the version is 1.12 whereas Steam proposes a 1.21 version with achievements and other want to have features.

When are you expecting to release an up to date version of this game ?

Thanks for your reply.

Updates on GOG are handled by GOG staff (I think they're experimenting with direct developer upload access with Games in Development but that only helps Galaxy users. Standalone installers are still build by GOG staff) and they don't usually work on weekends. Patches are usually uploaded within one or two business days from time they receive them unless they staff is swamped with work or there is a problem with the patch.

Thank you for the replies and yes the patch was released 2 minutes after my post.

Don't get me wrong I was not meaning to rush anybody.

@GOG staff: keep up the good work :-)
Unfortunately, this version (1.21) no longer works on Windows XP (giving a "not a valid Win32 application" message) due to the program headers for balrum.exe having been set to require Vista or later. This is a similar problem to the latest update to Nexus the Jupiter Incident, and it can be fixed by doing the following:

* Download and install a hex editor (I suggest using the free HxD);
* Make a backup copy of balrum.exe (HxD will make a backup copy too, but better to play safe);
* Open balrum.exe using HxD and change bytes 140 and 148 (hex) from 06 to 05 (see the outlined values in Balrum_fix.gif) - save this altered file;
* Try running Balrum.exe - it should now work.

As with Nexus, the most likely cause is Balcony Team's use of Visual Studio 2015 which requires patching for WinXP support.
