*Spoiler Ahead*
I figured i would make a guide towards my favorite character genre and class-The Rogue. This small guide is for anyone that chooses to go towards any of the rogue paths and for anyone that wants to know how to survive. I can give advice towards any Baldurs Gate character in that area (both regular BG and Tutu).
Alright, a few things to know about the rogue before we get started. I will list their pros and cons
Pros:
-Rogues are good at staying away from people, this can be reflected with the stealth skill and invisibility spell if you are a bard.
-They are usually either the character to start the battle or to end it, majorly due to backstab and spells if you are a bard.
-They make great archers. I'm not going to say they are the best (since that would hurt kivans feelings), but they are still good.
-If you are a bard, than they are almost more powerful than mages since bards advance at a faster rate lvl than a mage-hence more powerful low spells.
Cons:
-They are physically weak when it comes to fighting and should only be used as fighters if you know what you are doing.
-Backstab is a good ability, but if you mess up bad, it might cost you your life.
-They are the people that always go ahead first. Whatever goes ahead first has a chance of getting removed first.
-Require a bit of patience to play.
Alright, now that you know the strengths and weaknesses i will go over the way of the rogue that you can go. There are a few ways-

1)Rogue-This is for the regular thief class, and the bounty hunter for tutu players. These guys disarm traps, open locks, backstab a little and mostly is used as a covert information gatherer. This path is easily taken by spending a majority of your points on in this order-1)Stealth-Without this you can not get by. 2) Disarm Traps- More important than open locks imo as locks dont kill your party, traps do. 3)Open Locks-This should be maxed last as you can bash down most doors and chests with your tough party members. This char will be using a bow most of the time fighting is taking place.

2) Backstabber-This is for the regular thief class and the bounty hunter and assassin for tutu players. These guys are mostly mage killers and one man hunters. They will usually wait in a battle for someone to get separated and then backstab him, and if that works finish him off. This requires a lot of stealth ability, with a minor investment in pick locks (you cant backstab a guy if you cant get into his house). This class is very fun to play as, and i have spent a lot of time with it. Again it requires patience and some tact to get it right. You dont just backstab the toughest guy, as you will mostlikely get owned due to his high armor class. You pick out the guys you can take out and are alone. This class requires the best dagger or short sword you can get, the rest of the equipment is up to you, though i would recommend something with a good armor class anything that will increase your speed. For tutu, dual wielding is almost necessary due to the bonus attacks it grants. And for assassins, poison weapon is almost made for killing mages.

3)Duelist-This is for the regular thief class when dual classed from a fighter. For tutu, Kensai/Thief is good but suicidal due to not having any armor. Your better off just going with a fighter then dual classing at lvl 3 to get an extra proficiency and some thaco or at lvl5 to get to be even more powerful. DO NOT dual class after lvl 5 unless you know what you are doing. I would recommend going with lvl 3 fighter/than dual classing to thief. The reason i choose this is for pretty obvious reasons. You cant enjoy your experience of baldurs gate if you are waiting a long time to play as your primary class. If you are powergamer than fine, go ahead. But if you want to have fun with a character class that will allow you to have somewhat decent fighting potential and a large amount of more survivability than a regular thief, then this is what you want. The duelist does it all, except magic. They disarm traps like the rogue, backstab people like the backtstabber, and can last longer than both. They will mostlikely use a short sword or dagger and will dual wield if in tutu. Their only disadvantage is that they dont have the ability to go toe to toe with some of the big guys. However, their backstabs are brutally good and the big guys will lose a lot of life with a few hits. This class will mostly focus on stealth and a little bit on traps. None in locks since your role in the party is not a thief when you are the duelist.

4)Swashbuckler-This character is interesting to say the least. If you dont want to dual class and want a thief that fights (and of course are using tutu), this guy is your man. He can fight almost as well as a fighter and has a few pluses that they dont even have. First of all, they have pretty decent ac and thaco with it raising by 1 every 5 levels. Second, they have stealth which may not seem like much since they cant backstab, but it is considering you are playing as a singleclassed fighter/thief that turns out being an excellent mage killer if you time it right. Backstab is nice, but if it misses, you kinda are screwed as a regular thief. With this little guy, you can tank somewhat and prally might take out the mage. Lastly, this guy gets the max out of skill points per level making him able to focus on both stealth and maybe even 1 other skill like disarm traps or pick locks. Also see the end of this faq for a listing of detect illusions for all you tutu players.

5)Spellshafter- This is for the regular bard class, or a blade in tutu. This class is great if youve played before and bad if you havent. The bard is very fragile and needs care taken when you put him in battle. Which you wont often. If you are playing in tutu then go with the blade since they are one of the most powerful classes in the game. But for starters, bards are like thieves but they dont disarm traps, or pick locks. Instead they play a harp, pick pockets (very well), can cast spells and wield weapons. Basically a jack of all trades, master of none. Bards imo are better than mages because they have more health and can do more things. The bard should be chosen if you want to steal a lot of stuff, cast spells and talk your way out of a few situations. As such you should stay away from the front lines and instead stay in the back shooting arrows and casting magic missiles (awesome spell) and eventually fireballs (which own). This is probably the trickiest class to take, even for me its still a little aggravating.

6)Sniper-This is for the thief and bard in the regular game and any of the thief classes in tutu. The sniper is a not always needed role in a party. However if you want to have one in your party, its a very good choice. This class is also right up your alley if you like taking monsters out from a distance and while still invisible. Great in the beginning and still remains pretty good through the rest of the game. Focus on stealth and maybe one other thing. If you are playing the regular game then that thing would be traps since whats a scout if you cant disarm a trap. If tutu, then a whole number of more possibilities open up for you. You can make basically a hunter with traps and arrows or bolts with the bounty hunter class, luring your enemies to their death. Or if you want to be more instant, choose the assassin with poison weapon applied to your arrows and bolts. Great for the 1st game. Finally, even the swashbuckler is a good choice because even though you dont get the mastery, you still get +1 to hit, damage and armor class every 5 levels +the max amount of skill points per level. I could go on and on with the sniper build as its awesome but ill let you figure it out. Go with either crossbow or bow for this build.

Besides that stuff, the final thing i want to go over in this guide is traps and detect illusions, 2 skills you only get in tutu. If you are playing tutu you might want to read this. Traps are ok in tutu, and awesome in bg2. In tutu you dont reach a reasonable enough level to make traps good. I would recommend putting it up to 50 skill at max making it so you can fail, but it still will work half the time. Any more points is wasted.

As for detect illusions i will say this. I have used and abused this skill due to how powerful it is. I had it at 50 skill and i was able to destroy most mages and disable them for the most part. I should explain-While your party is fighting and you are hidden, go up by the mage while he is casting his defense illusion spells (like mirror image for example), and press detect traps. At skill 50 i was able to detect almost all mages in game which i find worth it. This is seriously the most easiest way to defeat a mage. And if you have backstab, hehe....all too easy.

So those are the 4 types of rogues based on my knowledge. I would like to say you should try and just play as the one that best serves your purpose. Remember one thing about the rogue. They are not there to kill everything in your path, they are there to isolate and disable opponents, and or finish off inconveniences. If anyone has a question about this or the class they are making please feel free to ask.

Nice - all I'd add is that the swashbuckler is good in Tutu if you don't mind not having backstab; I usually don't use backstab due to how exposed it tends to leave the poor fellow, so no great loss for me. In exchange, I get bonuses to AC and attack rolls every five levels, plus the ability to specialize in melee weapons.

Taking fighter level 4 or 5 won't add anything except a few hitpoints, while fighter level 6 will add even more hitpoints, +1 to hit, an extra proficiency point and still allow to take 9 thief levels, so I'd never take a fighter5/thief, I'd rather wait until level 6 or 7, but level 3 is the best level for dualing from fighter to thief.

Playing a dualclass fighter/thief works well with Imoen, she can do the the thievery until your character becomes a thief and dual to illusionist after reaching level 5.

The reason i said that lvl 5 is the highest lvl i recommend taking is because it takes a while before you get to use your fully polished and ready character and in a game like baldurs gate, not only does it get annoying (at least for me), but it also makes battles harder when playing as a hack. That was the only reason for not going with anything higher than 6. If you can wait and are patient, than go as high of a lvl as you can.
