Oh my god, the characters move so damn slow in this game.

There isn't any mod there to include the possibility to run? I'm accustomed to games like Planescape or Arcanum where you can move faster and for that reason it's being really painful to play Baldur's Gate.
I'm not well-versed in the Tutu stuff, but if you have BG1 and BG2, you can combine them to get BG2's faster walking speed. Otherwise, I don't think there's a way to change it.

Edit: I do remember someone saying there was a debug command to give all your characters shoes of haste. It speeds it up, but monsters won't speed up, so it's kind of cheating.

If you change the speed from 30 to 60 frame per sec in the configuration before game start it should speed things up. I dont remember if you can only do that with BG2 though. What Tallima suggests will work though.

If you are a quick thinker or a obsessive pauser, you could try increasing the AI updates in the options, you CAN do it with BG1. However I have noticed that this does mess up cut scenes somewhat (or at least did when I tried it out). The Cut scenes don't break (and there really aren't any) but they do look funny.
I believe the intent was to really give the player a feel for "slogging it out" on foot, realism and all that, given that you are carrying a weapon, armor, supplies, and whatever else, it just wouldn't be physically possible to run everywhere.

But if you must, you can play BG1 in the enhanced BG2 engine using EasyTutu (guides are on this forum), which would mean the increased movement speeds of BG2.

BUT if you do this, and you choose to install the Tutu fixpack 18, make sure you choose what you install and don't install BG1 Walking Speeds.
