Thinking of playing this through with a friend. Neither of us has ever played it before, so is it possible for both players to enjoy the story in one play-through?

I have more RPG experience than she does, so would it be better for me to play through the game once by myself, and then a second time as one of her party members?

Without giving away the plot, the story will make much more sense if someone plays a the main protagonist, and everyone else (NPCs and other PCs) plays a supporting role. I think both of you could enjoy the plot, but it wouldn't be as easy to get immersed , perhaps. In the end, it depends on the personalities involved; the act of playing together might be worth the downsides for you two. For myself, I would probably go with your second option and play it through first on your own, then play a supporting role for her on a second time through the game.

EDIT: After thinking it over, I think it might be fun if you played it together. You could just replace Imoen (The childhood friend that starts off with the protagonist) with a character of your own making. Your friend would be the protagonist, and you would be her childhood friend. True, the story wouldn't be about you directly, but it would still make sense that you would have a vested interest in the outcome. By ditching Imoen, you really don't lose that much, just some banters (no quests or anything). If you plan to play BG2 the same way, this will cause continuity errors (Imoen plays a rather large role in BG2), but as far as BG1 goes, the impact should be minor.

A word of warning. Imoen is possibly my favorite NPC in the game. Not sure why, but I think it is her incessant happy-go-lucky attitude. I don't think I could bear to get rid of her, even for a MP playthrough (unless it is a no NPC run or something). Some people can't stand her though, so play through the first hour or so of the game until you meet up with her (right after the tutorial part of the game, actually) and see if she grates on you or endears herself to you, maybe?

Thanks for that answer; it really helps a lot.

One more question, if you don't mind. I understand that, if we played it together the first time through, I should replace Imoen with myself for story reasons. However, if I played it to completion myself first, then decided to play a second time as her supporting character, should I choose someone else to replace? My character wouldn't need to be as invested in the story if I had already played through it once. So, is there any one character in the game who we could ditch and not cause continuity errors in BG2?

You don't need to ditch Imoen or anyone else - your friend will create the protagonist, you will create a second character, and then you will recruit four other NPCs (rather than creating one character and recruiting five as you'd do in single player). This isn't a JRPG that forces its party members on you for story reasons - you can select the NPCs you prefer out of the 20-some that are in the game.
So, essentially, it works like other BioWare RPGs and I don't have to have a particular set of characters for the story to make sense. Okay, thanks to both of you for the help.

Sorry if I seem a little stupid regarding this; I've never played a D&D RPG before and it's pretty intimidating to me. Just want to make sure I have all the facts before diving in.

Yeah, what vbigiani said. You don't HAVE to replace Imoen, I just figured it might be cool to take over her place in the story for a co-op game. Truly, you could play as three friends from Candlekeep (instead of just two), if you want... or whatever. The plot in BG1 is all about the protagonist, role-play encounters might behave differently based on who is in the party, but everything is doable regardless who is or is not in the party (correct me if i am wrong, anyone, but I can't think of a single quest or area that requires an NPC be present in the party for BG1).
Canonically, Imoen is in your party at the end of BG1 (because she is there at the start of BG2), but there is no real reason you have to take her, or anyone else around. I think that BG2 plot might work a little better if you already have an emotional connection with Imoen, but it is hardly necessary. I mean, you are going to understand the plot either way.
I think I may have made it seem more complex than it really is. You asked if you could have fun and understand the plot if you played a co-op game with your friend. I think the answer to both is 'yes'. Everything else I wrote was me spit-balling how *I* might go about playing a co-op game.

No problem, sorry again if i confused the issue with my first response. I think you 'get it' now though, so at least there is that :).

No, really, you were very helpful. I probably would have spit-balled if I had to answer a question like this about a series I love.

Since it is so protagonist-centric, I think I will give the game a full play-through myself first so I can enjoy the story. I can't imagine playing a BioWare game for the first time and watching somebody else make all the big decisions.

Thanks again. I'll probably start playing it tomorrow. Hope I can get past the learning curve.

The only quests that require specific characters are when you try to get the second one of a duo; say the one of the rangers and the female mage or a bard and his thief girlfriend, or needing to have a male in the party do be able to get the female fighter.

Hi all. Me and my cousin just installed this game and wanted to try-out the multiplayer ability. The problem is, we cant connect to each other using TCP/IP (we've obtainined each other's IP address). Both of us are currently using WiFi (fiber). Other types of connection (MODEM, SERIAL, etc) is unavailable to us. Please help. :'(
Apparently my computer chose not to load the secondary posts here... Darn.
