I am fighting the Hulks in the second area, the De'Arnise Hold. I need a prevent from confusion item but I don't seem to have one. Do I have to go all the way back to town to get something?

Every time I walk into that room I get slammed. Defense buffs, minor spell deflection, bleh. I tried everything I got. I can't think of anymore combos.

The 4 or 5 Umber Hulks in the basement area? You don't have to fight them.

Hints:
They are hungry.
They have a taste for dog flesh.
Explore the area with an invisible character so they don't see you.

Solution *Spoilers*:
There should be some dogs outside in the courtyard, kill them and take their meat.
Go to the kitchen and use the stove to cook up some dog stew.
When you're downstairs have your party stay out of the umber hulks' sights, then send a hidden thief or a character with invisibility into the area with them, then proceed to the east-south-east area.
You should see a pile of bones somewhere; put the stew in the pile.
Return to your party.
Now the way should be clear - just avoid the area where you left the food.
(Spoiler cont'd from previous post:) And don't forget to shut the doors!

LOL! I love that part of the game. I usually trap the umber hulks, then go at Torgal, and then my party and I go kill the umber hulks! Can't leave them around for the remaining D'Arnise Guards to deal with now, can we?

Edit: There are some anti-confusion weapons and armor that you find throughout the game (in stores & adventuring), some which are found in Athkatla ie- have you found Lilarcor?

Who's in your party? If memory serves, the Berserker's frenzy ability makes them immune to the effect. I believe I had Korgan take them out when I went through there.
TY all for information, the dog stew definitely was a nice avoidance of that.

The battle with Torgal was intense... I was about to post here I couldn't do it at my level I guess. I am very low level I have just gone through the story as fast as possible.

I did it anyway... I had to use about every ability I had... Doom/color spray/bark skin/strength/speed/healing/chaos/slow/flame sabers (Whatever it is called) and others... and more etc. etc. wow that was an intense battle very fun. If every fight is like that in BG2 I can see why everyone says this game is awesome. Very gratifying killing something hehe. Only took me 4-5 tries to even beat the boss. I love a game with a good difficulty level, well I'm not playing on high difficulty at all for my first play. But still.. this is very entertaining.

Can't believe I JUST played this... after it's been out for years!!!!!

The Cloudkill spell is great against Umber Hulks, too. It'll kill them instantly if they fail their save. You probably don't have the actual spell yet, but it's quite possible you've got a Wand o'Cloudkill by now.

I normally let Minsc or the like with Lilarcor (that sword fits him perfectly) stand up front and absorb all the confusion gazes while Nalia stands back and Cloudkills them. Alternatively you can use a spell like Chaotic Commands to protect you.
