(Note: Just for the record, before I posted this, I did CTRL-F through the manual and couldn't find anything. I did some Googling, as well.)

I've picked up quite a few gems and pieces of jewelry since I've started playing, and I'm just wondering a few things about them.

1. Are the gems part of a crafting system that I haven't encountered yet?

2. Can standard, non-enchanted jewelry be enchanted at some point later in the game?

3. Does jewelry contribute to any sort of overall "clothing value" that determines how certain people treat you, as in Morrowind?

4. If no to all of the above, what purpose do they serve?

Thanks in advance.

The only purposes these gems serve in an unmodded game are the following.

1) To sell for gold. This is the main use.
2)Turning in a specific type of gem or a specific piece of jewelry for a quest. Jewelry will be marked with the person's name; gems just require a matching type.

Basically, they're vendor trash. Some are used in crafting weapons in BG2 and ToB, but those obviously aren't this game. Sorry, and have fun playing!
Thanks; really appreciate the help. I had read that they had a use in BG2 and ToB, but I wasn't sure if they did in BG1. Now I can head to the market to empty out everyone's pockets!
Also, keep notes (or, just remember, if you think you can) on which ones sell for a decent amount, and which ones don't. There are no containers, such as ammo belts and gem bags, like in BG2, so inventory maintenance can become a real chore. It is always helpful to know which vendor fodder is worth keeping, and which you can safely dump once your pockets start to overflow.
