I suspect I have this problem also - I get combat music but as soon as combat ends everything is dreadfully quiet.

:(
Try disabling ambient sound / EAX if you haven't already

I can't hear any music in BG1 either. I can only hear music at the main menu but that's it. When I start a new game, I only hear ambient sounds and people talking.
Could this maybe help? http://www.gog.com/forum/baldurs_gate_series/fedora_tarball_problems_with_audio_and_fix

I'm using Windows and I still can hear sounds, but for some reason the music doesn't play.

Music is not an 'on all of the time' thing in Baldur's Gate; not a background event. It is triggered by certain events or timers. The best way to trigger music is to go into battle.

Is there a close battle when the game is restarted to test this out?

Yes, in the tutorial area there are several safe places where battle occurs: the bunk house or priest quarters (assassins attack), the store house (rats attack), the training hall (gibberlings attack).

Interesting! Also, have you ever tried the "Gibberlings3 Widescreen Patch" for BG1? The default resolution for BG1 is too small. But when I try the widescreen patch it keeps giving me this error:
FAILURE:
EXE patching failed.
Stopping installation because of error.
ERROR: [bgmain2.exe] -> [bgmain2.exe] Patching Failed (COPY) (Failure("EXE patch
ing failed."))

Is there a way to fix this?

What version of the game (with or without TotSC) do you have? Is it the 3CD version?

It's GOG's version of BG1 (v1.3.5521). But whenever I try to use the WS patch it always fails. Is there something else I have to do to make it work?

In that case, (a) where do you have the game installed (what folder path), and (b) what path did you extract the widescreen mod to?
I think I finally got the patch to work. I tried redownloading the gibberlings3 WS patch directly to the game's folder and then launching the patch from there. That seemed to work.

Music in BG doesn't play continually, but there is a -lot- of non-battle music. Sometimes it's quiet for a bit after a track's finished, but generally they start up right on entering an area, no timers required. Indeed, I can't think of any area that doesn't have some music. Icewind Dale is quiet, with music playing more rarely outside towns and even battle music being the exception rather than the rule. Not Baldur's Gate.

As an easy way to test: there should be music playing in Candlekeep even when you're not in battle. There should be lively tunes in each and every tavern. (Except the Elfsong.) There should be specific themes for Beregost and Baldur's Gate, and more generic ones that pop up over the wilderness and in smaller towns. There should be low-key background music in dungeons and in sewers. There should be different music for the day and for the night. There should be a lot of music.

If you're still not sure if there's a problem, just check the soundtrack you can download from GOG. If the named tracks aren't playing where they're supposed to, you indeed have a problem of some kind.
