Hey i am considering purchasing copies of this for myself and a few friends, but i want to know if the multiplayer works before i do. The original baldur's gate one and two used the ipx protocol which is outdated and doesn't work with windows 7. Does this game use a more updated protocol that will run?

I don't think GOG did any updating with respect to the multiplayer protocol. The few posts I've seen discussing it have referred to third party clients to get it running (such as GameRanger).

ah darn. i was hoping for an easy way for my friends and myself to get playing these great games again

GameRanger IS an easy way for friends to play together. That's exactly what it was designed for. It actually works better than the game ever did in the first place.
