So I am learning C++ from thenewboston on youtube. I was hoping to open the guts of BG so I could see how some of the concepts he is talking about are applied. What would be the best files to look at for comparison as the language demystifies?

Look at GemRB. It's an open source clone/port of the Infinity Engine.
