I'm in Ulgoth's Beard, just finished the very tough fight in basement of the Cult; everyone was OK, except Kivan (Elf Ranger) was HELD. SO I saved over my Quicksave, and then all of a sudden, a ghast pops up out of nowhere and kills Kivan instantly! Can't prevent it by surrounding him with others, casting heal spells or even by using Gatekeeper (save game editor)to change location.

Since Kivan is an Elf, he can not be resurrected. I tried to change him to Half Elf in Gatekeeper, but it won't let me change him (everyone else OK!!)

Looking at his condition in the game, there is also an icon saying "DYING" : wft is this??
Any ideas how I can save Kivan w/o going back 2 or 3 hours of game play to an old save? Especially with 2 really tough fights to re-do

Any way to remove the HELD spell ( Kivan can't do anything, no drinking potions)

Kivan was affected by the demon gaze which slowly turned him into a ghast. A successfull dispel magic will cure him.
If you have to replay the battle drinking a potion of mirrored eyes or using similar protection can help.

Ah, so that's what is going on!! Thanks!

I've tried Dispel Magic a half dozen times, no joy so far. Only my cleric has the spell - and I had a good half dozen 'buff' spells cast. I'll keep trying, but it don't look good

Worst case, but DebugMode=1 under [Program Options] in baldur.ini in the game directory, load the game, and press CTRL+T to heal the entire party.

Whoops, you're running a vanilla BG1/TotSC aren't you? (I assumed you were running a BG2 mod).

OK, try this instead. In the BG1 game directory, open Baldur.ini, and under [Game Options], enter: Cheats=1. Save and close.

Start the game, press CTRL+TAB to open the command console.

Enter "CLUAConsole:EnableCheatKeys()" Press enter.

Select Kivan, and while hovering the cursor over him, press CTRL+R

EDIT: If that doesn't work, let Kivan die. Can you kill the ghast and pick up all Kivan's old gear? If so, after he's dead and gone from the party, try:
CLUAConsole:CreateCreature("Kivan")
-talk to him and get him in your party, and then select only Kivan and-
CLUAConsole:SetCurrentXP("XXXXX")
-where XXXX is the XP he should have.

Heals but doesn't remove negative affects - I can kill him (CNTRL +Y) or heal his hit points him, but nor remove Demon gaze! Looks like I'm stuck

Thanks for the help - I did learn a whole lot about the cheats for BG1 !
Kill him, cheat in enough gold to have him resurrected, then take him to a temple and have him raised.
Let Kivan die, got him back with console - but when I try to save get a crash ( 3 times), this is with or without restoring his XP or equipment

"An Assertion failed at D:\Dev\Baldur\ObjCreature.cpp at line number 8407"

which is interesting since D is my DVD drive which is empty, (game is in C:\Old Games\Baldurs Gate)

Errrr...my last bit of advice is to move the party to a new location before saving.

Miloch got a simliar problem a while back. He's knowledgable about the IE and may have more sense of the problem, and I think he's still pretty active at G3.

The board was pretty active still a few months back, along with Spellhold Studios. I think you could fish a response from either within a day or two.

Found a few references to "Assertion failure..." but no solutions that worked for me - I suspect that when Kivan dies, some flag is set somewhere and doesn't get reset if/when you console him back to life.

Oh well, it took less time to reload an earlier save and replay than all the time I spent trying to work around it!

Thnx all for suggestions
