hi, im currently getting back into BG2 (tho ive never actaully beaten the game in a normal way) i always play as a mage or sorcerer (sp?) and i was wondering what are the best items i can use for a mage/sorcerer, and what items should i get for the starter npc? (minsc/boo, the druid chick, the priest chick, and the rogue, sorry im just bad with their names) i only need to know the items name and what person to use it on, i can look up the cheats later, thanks.

ok im having problems with getting the cheats to works, so far ive tried

Cheats=1
Debug Mode=1
DebugMode=1

all under program options and game option. and none of it worked. i do have all 3 typed in on under both heading right now, could this be a problem?

ok, i got them to work by simply running the game as an adminstrator.
Debug Mode=1 goes under [Program Options]
Ctrl / Space to open console

Get rid of the rest.

See Dan Simpsons " Item list" for BG2 on gamefaqs.com.
http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/258273-baldurs-gate-ii-shadows-of-amn/faqs/9332
He gives the codes for basically every item in the game.
Its more fun to just find the items in the game.
But if you want to cheat them in, all the codes are there.
I'm still on my first playthrough so not got enough advice on the best items but for the editing you might want to try shadowkeeper.
It's easy to use it to add/delete/multiply items in your inventory (or at least it looks easy, haven't used it for that myself - I just used it to help with the Jaheira romance bugs).

With it you can look up items as well so you know the effects/stats.

As for suggested items:
The ring of holiness is good for a cleric (adds cleric spells)
Minsc could do well with the Crom Feyr (it's a super-weapon (hammer +5) you're supposed to make from other items, later in the game - strength set to 25 and other bonuses)
Ring of wizardry / Amulet of meta-spell influence gives more spells (to certain levels) to a mage (not sure for a sorcerer)
Boots of speed are good for a rogue who can hide, go into enemy midst, back-stab and then run away. Maybe cloak of non-detection (but my thief (Imoen) keeps getting spotted anyway, I think it doesn't work on some beasties.
Best weapon for a mage (AFAIK) is the staff of the magi (invisible, magic protection @ 50% and other bonuses on equip and it's a +5 weapon)

Otherwise some cloaks/rings of protection +2 are good for enhancing AC for anyone but especially frontline fighters need good AC (lower AC is better for anyone reading who doesn't know).

Scrolls of simulacrum and time-stop make a mage extra powerful (I can cast simulacrum now with my mage but not levelled up to time-stop yet - could use the scroll if I still had it though).

Vhailor's Helm lets even a fighter cast simulacrum I think.
NB: simulacrum creates a lower-level copy of your character (PC or NPC) which has the spells(less the level-drain)/quick-items/weapons of the original - handy.

Edit: best armour in the game is the Drow Full-plate armour (supposed to disintegrate in sunlight but I read it only does so when you leave the underdark)

cheat too many good items though and the game might be too easy at first and just hard later.

Look for something called "ShadowKeeper." It's a BG2 save-game editing program that I find MUCH easier to use than the console. You can handle items with it.
