Just cheating it in is a faster version of save scumming.
I've always wondered why these games (and Dungeon Hack, for that matter) don't allow mages to pick a spell at level up; they can in the Gold Box series, so why not here? If you were allowed to pick one spell per level up, you would be able to take ADHW at level 16, and sorcerers wouldn't have an advantage in spell availability over mages (it seems rather silly that they do, given that sorcerers are supposed to have a smaller selection of spells to balance out their spontaneous casting).

This sort of thing is also partly why, in Icewind Dale and Dungeon Hack, Clerics are so much better than Mages. (Of course, there's also the fact that Icewind Dale is filled with undead, and Dungeon Hack has Cleric spells that mitigate much of the game's dangers like Create Food, but the lack of need for scrolls is a big one (particularly in Dungeon Hack where finding a scroll in the first place is RNG dependent).)
