Every few years I check in on GemRB. This bug list (http://www.gemrb.org/wiki/doku.php?id=todo) never seems to get smaller. It's also exhausting to read and understand.

So here's my question: is GemRB really a viable option yet? Can you play it without really noticing that it's different? Or is it still broken enough that you're going to run into some very noticeable issues.
Developer here. The list is ever changing and through the years only morphed into a list of more and more obscure and nitpicky bugs, which demonstrates clear progress.

Both BGs have been pleasantly completable for some releases, though of course there are still some bugs that can be annoying — if at the same level than in the original, I can't tell. Don't expect a mirror image of the original, but that is good in some cases (ctrl-w for looting being a trivial one).

Since bg1 is simpler, there's less stuff to go wrong and regress, but in bg2 it is clear some spell projectiles are missing or only partially there. Hardcoded crap from the original engine that we don't understand fully yet ... If you don't have photographic memory or aren't hyperpedantic, playing them with gemrb can be fun.

In any case, I'd wait for a month or so for the next release. It will have several improvements and while the most noticeable will be for the underdogs (pst, iwd2), general engine progress affects all supported games.

Thank you very much for the detailed reply. I'm definitely not the photographic memory / hyperpedantic type, so I'll probably give it a shot. :^)
