Hi,

Playing BG1 bought from GOG on Mac - unmodded.

Garrick is immediately outside the Burning Wizard. Has been there for a long time as I've left and returned many times.

When I try to initiate dialogue nothing seems to happen. I've never been able to access the Burning Wizard.

Is this a bug? Can anyone offer any assistance?

Thanks in advance.

Garrick is supposed to stand outside the Burning Wizard, but to the side of the door, not blocking it. He should react to you; he's waiting for somebody to help his employer, Silke, who's around the corner, standing outside the Red Sheaf. So, with no mods, him blocking the door, and dialog not triggering, you have a problem. Is it a bug? I don't know. Have you edited the save game in any way?
Hi Hickory, thanks for the reply.

He's blocking the door. I've not edited the save file. I'm playing on a mac if that makes a difference?

I seem to be able to kill him without reputation loss so I might just go with that approach.

Separate but possibly linked issue. After killing Garrick I went into the blacksmith's shop and all NPCs had disappeared. I figured it was due to my killing Garrick so I loaded a pre-Garrick-death save and went into the blacksmith's again. Once again all of the NPCs had disappeared. I think this is the first time I'd been in since I'd picked up the ankheg armour. Is this another bug or is this supposed to happen?
Been Googling this:

I've read that the blacksmith is only there 12 hours/day so if that is the case then no problem there.

I read up on the Garrick/Silke. I recall the first time I reached the town he asked me to help someone but at the time I was heading to Nashkel mines with the early NPCs so thought it would be against a realistic approach to suddenly divert for an unknown time to act as a guard against something that might or might not happen.

But it would seem silly if turning him down would then lead to him blocking the Burning Wizard!

Does this mean that any interaction with Silke is now impossible? When I approach her I'm told she can't talk as she's waiting for someone.

One solution to remove Garrick is apparently to charm him (or to polymorph). I have the canon party and I think that Danaheir cannot charm? Can any character with sufficient INT use a scroll?
If you spoke to Garrick earlier, and refused him, he is supposed to apologise for taking up your time and then simply disappear forever, making the Silke quest unavailable. If he walked to the door but didn't disappear, then you have encountered a bug -- when an NPC is scripted to 'EscapeArea()' they walk towards the nearest exit (a building door suffices) and vanish. Note: using Charm is the same as killing him, because it's a hostile spell -- he will turn hostile when it wears off.

The Thunderhammer smithy is occupied from 0430-2130 (4.30am - 9.30pm).

Only mages and bards can use arcane scrolls. Charm Person is a level one spell. but Dynaheir cannot use it because it's in her opposition school (Enchantment/Charm).
Are you talking about the Burning Wizard Inn or the Red Sheaf Inn?

I usually run into this issue on the way to Nashkel with a full party including Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Xzar, and Montaron. I do not want him in the party because I do not intend to keep him and Montaron is better at killing things with a sling. So I talk to Garrick and he wants in and we say "sorry." He walks towards the Red Sheaf Inn and sometimes blocks the entrance.

If I talk to him again and tell him, "Sorry we are full-up," then he will walk away and disappear.
Thanks both.

It seems that killing him has had no ill effects as I've progressed some way now and my reputation has not been harmed.

Definitely the Burning Wizard Inn.

That's correct. Garrick, like all recruitable NPCs, is not classed as an 'innocent', so killing him has no reputation hit.
