I just downloaded this game and it flickers uncontrollably to the point I am unable to play the game. I have tried compatability mode and my drivers are up to date. Not sure how to fix this. Please help.

Try turning off V-sync and check if it isn't forced on by your video card settings.
try disabling hardware acceleration.
What are the specs of your pc? Then we can help better. Also, is this regarding Baldur's Gate 1 or 2?

There are some difficulties with newer nVidia gpu's for example, which can be solved with this (it's the nvidia_fix.zip). This also affects the nVidia 9-series (as that's a rebranded 8 series anyway), don't know about the newer ones.

In the case of BG2, it could be that you have Anti-Aliasing enabled; this doesn't work very nicely with BG2, and can cause flickering as well.

I had a similar problem with both ATI and nVidia cards. If I remember correctly I had to do as Gromuhl suggested and disable AA in my video cards control panel.
what I did was turn my internet security off and now my game runs smoooth when I turn it on tho... choppy as hell
My Screen Flickers Uncontrollably while playing baldur's gate Tosc and I cant figure out how to get it to stop.

Computer:
windows 7 Ulti w Service pack 1
Twin Radion HD 6800 crossfired / CCC vs 11.9
intel i7 950 processor

I've read a few posts about disabling catalyst A.I., but you cant do that in VS 11.9
When I had this, I either enabled or disabled triple buffering, fixed it right up.
olnorton: Download the DXSDK from Microsoft. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=6812
It's a large download, but it will give you all the old DX libraries (as apposed to the latest "backwards compatible" ones)

It will also give you a way to disable Hardware Acceleration for Direct Draw.

Go to:
Start
All Programs
Microsoft DirectX SDK (June2010)
DirectX Utilities (Not the 64bit version)
DirectX Control Panel

On the DirectDraw Tab, untick Use Hardware Acceleration.
need to unninstal c++ 2010 (x64 & x86) before installing the Direct x SDK

WORKS PERFECTLY NOW!!! THANKS Olnorton The almigthy
