AudioCG: I dont get why people dont just plain turn off UAC period. (I have since day 1, made full administrator, never have to worry about anything now really)
It serves no real purpose, and it pops up so damn much that most average PC users would most likley blindly hit "allow" even if it was performing an action not desired.
Because some of the stuff it does behinds the scenes (that it never prompts you about) can help keep novice users out of hot water.
I turn UAC off as well, but I know what I am doing.
Big Big Big tip for people playing older games on Windows Vista/7.. DO NOT install to Program Files, always modify the install location to somewhere else (eg: c:\Games) so that UAC doesn't have a hissy fit.
Common issues w/ UAC and BG1/2 installed to Program Files:
1) "I changed the shortcut to run as administrator and now my saves are gone!" - this is because Windows was redirecting the file operations of the game in the background, this is to save a UAC prompt/error box popping up [sometimes crashing games] when saving to the game folder [which is where BG 1 & 2 keep their saves]. The save files aren't gone however, they are in the VirtualStore folder [C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Game Folder\Saves - usually].
2) "I try to save the ini but get a message the file doesn't exist, or it says it cannot be saved [out of disk space, read only, etc]" This is UAC at work again. To edit the file properly you need to run the text editor as Administrator (right click, Run as Administrator) and then navigate to the ini file and edit it. A more involved process includes changing the permissions on the game folder so that your user has full RW access [not for novices].
