Hi, having played both BG1 & BG2 extensively back in the day, I was wondering in anyone knows if this version of the day is able to have cheat codes entered? I tried to modify the .ini file where you normally type cheats=1, but it said access denied, which I was surprised by. Any thoughts? Thanks.

It has nothing to do with game version. It means that file is protected from changing. Check if it's read-only file.

Or did you by chance install the game in 'Program Files' under Vista / Win7? Try to edit the file as administrator then.
Thanks a bunch that was it (I used to know so much more about computers). Sadly, I still can't seem it get the CLUA Console thing to pop up when I hit cntl-tab, so I still have some playing around to do, but thanks a bunch for your help.

Maybe you have some global hotkeys set? That could make console non-working.
At any rate, I wish you luck =)
If you're in Windows 7 (and probably Visaster, too) the Admin account isn't really the Admin account - you don't have full permissions for the C: drive. You need to edit your profile to be full admin, then take control of C: through its properties, away from "System".

Then, you can edit files on that drive.

Edit : slight clarification.

BG1 or BG2?

For BG1, the console is accessed by pressing CTRL+TAB.

BG2 uses CTRL+Space.

I assume this is where to post this. When I edit the .ini file it tells me the file does not exist. so I go to save it and it says 'This file excists do you want to replace'........what do I do???
Thanks for all the helpful information!

I finally was able to edit the file (I wasn't the original poster, but the thread and advice have been quite useful).

Then I immediately booted up the game. Now it seems all of my saved games have been lost. Does anyone now why/how that would have happened?

Thanks!
Having pretty much the same problem. I've been able to edit the ini file, but when playing, ctrl+space only pauses the game. I'm running under Vista and don't have ctrl set as a global hot-key. I even went so far as to make a copy of the ini file, edit on the desktop and move/replace original file. No change. Did GOG disable cheats? Or is it bugged somehow?
Hello everyone...new issue with the famous baldur.ini file... this may be due to my lack of DETAILED computer experience, but...I have found the file, opened it under WordPad,, typed "Cheats=1" DIRECTLY underneath the "Game Options" heading... but every time I try to save, I get a message that states, and I quote, "Could not create C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\BlackIsle\Baldur'sGate\Baldur.ini Make sure file and path name are correct." Does anyone recognize this issue and know how to solve it? Thanks for your time and consideration!

If you're on Vista of Win7 then run Wordpad as Administrator

I dont get why people dont just plain turn off UAC period. (I have since day 1, made full administrator, never have to worry about anything now really)

It serves no real purpose, and it pops up so damn much that most average PC users would most likley blindly hit "allow" even if it was performing an action not desired.

Because some of the stuff it does behinds the scenes (that it never prompts you about) can help keep novice users out of hot water.

I turn UAC off as well, but I know what I am doing.

Big Big Big tip for people playing older games on Windows Vista/7.. DO NOT install to Program Files, always modify the install location to somewhere else (eg: c:\Games) so that UAC doesn't have a hissy fit.

Common issues w/ UAC and BG1/2 installed to Program Files:

1) "I changed the shortcut to run as administrator and now my saves are gone!" - this is because Windows was redirecting the file operations of the game in the background, this is to save a UAC prompt/error box popping up [sometimes crashing games] when saving to the game folder [which is where BG 1 & 2 keep their saves]. The save files aren't gone however, they are in the VirtualStore folder [C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Game Folder\Saves - usually].

2) "I try to save the ini but get a message the file doesn't exist, or it says it cannot be saved [out of disk space, read only, etc]" This is UAC at work again. To edit the file properly you need to run the text editor as Administrator (right click, Run as Administrator) and then navigate to the ini file and edit it. A more involved process includes changing the permissions on the game folder so that your user has full RW access [not for novices].
