My problem is after I group all party members into a single group i can no longer just select one individual. Any ideas why, or better yet any ideas how to fix this?

You can use the keys 1-6 to select your characters, you can click their portrait on the sidebar or you can select their avatar in the main screen.

Yeah, tried all that already.

Save your game and close the game. Restart it and see if the problem still exists
