I have a question about Mae'var's treachery quest.

After the first quest, I was tasked to kill a cowled wizard named Reyic, who was investigating Edwin.
Even though Reyic seems like an asshole, I don't like the idea of killing somebody because he was doing his job.
Not to mention, my party doesn't want to perform this task either.

I have attempted to converse with Reyic to stop the investigation, but I was given no option to do so.

Is there anyway to prove Mae'var's betrayal without killing Reyic?

No, the game forces you to kill Gethras.

I think there's some mod (Quest Pack? can't really remember, it's been too long) that introduces additional options and gives you the option to let Gethras live...but no, in unmodded BG2 you have to kill him if you want to finish that quest. Kind of lame.

EDIT: Yes, it's Quest Pack from Pocket plane that changes this...(as well as that Harpers base quest which really makes no sense in the vanilla game).
