Your not wrong on that, sorcerers are one of the coolest characters in the games. That and the wildmage are the only 2 magic characters i can play as. Especially the wild mage since they are psychotic and fun to roleplay.
By the time i was 40... I had all 5 of each levels spells, could cast them 5-6 times, and summon planter raped everything.... Cast that once, meteor horrid wilting and other spells for lols!.

Edit: AND all the epic quest level spells :) I had more level 10 (9?) spells than the rest of the levels lol

I'd have to say one the most powerful and possibly most fun characters I've played has been a muliticlass/dual class fighter/mage. You get some really powerful spells and can tank better than a plain fighter thanks to an abundance of armor and protection spell. This class choice is so good you can solo the game with it. Some people argue for a a kensai/mage dual class, but this is tough to pull off because of the restrictions on weapons you have to deal with for the first half of the game until your mage level is equal to your kensai level. This can be solved by going for a weapon mastery in staves.

either way, fighter/mage mix is good.
Somebody mentioned the fighter/mage/rogue, also a very awesome mix of classes.
vaguesan, with the Fighter/Mage build, where do you put your ability points, and what weapons/styles do you put points in? Baring in mind I'm playing with Trilogy/Tutu, so I'll be playing through BG1 and 2 with this character. Always fancied trying a Fighter/Mage. Also, what level do you dual class? :)
If you are playing trilogy it will be much easier to play a multiclass fighter/mage as a half elf so you get that extra constitution. Trilogy is much harder to dual class unless you know exactly what you are doing mostly since you are going into bg2 you will mostly at most be dual classing at lvl 3-6. This is bad because bg2 is a lvl 24 game. Thus a lvl 4-6 character will not be giving you much of anything. Still, this is not to say it cant be done. Dual classing would work really well though in tutu because you will be getting at lvl 10 or 11.

If you do dual class into a wizard, you have 2 or 3 real choices. You could use a plain fighter which is generic and has no real disadvantages. Not a bad choice. You could use a berserker and get the same benefits of the fighter but...will be able to rage which is really poweful. A lot of people underestimate rage, but in reality it will make your character immune to a lot of spells and effects. And it gives you a boost to your damage and stuff. If you do berserker or fighter and dual class into a mage you should do it at lvl 5 or 6. You could also get away with lvl 4 but nothing less than that.

The last option is actually the most used one which is taking a kensai to lvl 4 and dual classing. The reason behind this is that the kensai gets an attack speed bonus at lvl 4 and a damage and hit bonus at lvl 3 which means a lvl 4 kensai would have the same chance to hit as the berserker or fighter above when he is one level lower. Also the kensai is very good as a mage since he wears no armor and gets a bonus to ac. I would recommend that class, but the other 2 can work just as well.
Stay away from kensai if you start in BG1. Kensai disadvantages are there from the beginning, but the benefits grow very slowly with levels.

The best choice for figher/mage mix is gnome fighter/illusionist multiclass. The extra spell per level and day does make a big difference, 19 int and racial saving throw bonuses won't hurt either.
Fighter/illusionist eh? You know, no one ever tries mixing a rogue type character with a mage. I wonder if an Assassin/mage would work. Backstab + Invisibility equals killer! That might be worth looking up.

I think I'm still going to roll up a pure paladin for starting in BG1. Using a kit paladin would still feel cheap to me, but it probably isn't
I don't like dual classes... Very gear dependent in my opinion. A pure mage/sorcerrer is awsome cause of the mix of certain spells and the amount, especially with sorcerrer, of spells you can cast is rediculous. With Friekrag I just cast the summon planr spell and boom vorpral effect and one hit dead... I was like,,, well lol guess i shouldn't have done that...
Firekrag is an asshole to fight normally.

IMO, if what you're doing isn't a glitch or an exploit, it's never "unfair" to do it. It's put there in the game, and Baldur's Gate is a really hard game any way you look at it (or at least on your first time) so playing a relatively easy class isn't unfair or anything.

I guess I should have said "un-balanced". Since a kit like an inquisitor or undead hunter doesn't exist in BG1 and are only available through BGT, I was wary of making the first game unbalanced.
I always hated fight those damned mind flayers.... The always pisonic blasted my ass into oblivion and I was like..... Sad Panda T~T

Probably because a thief/mage is so stereotypical in this game. After all, in the base game, there's only one thief that isn't a mage, and only two mages that don't have theif levels. As for the assassin/mage question, that depends, does anyone know if you can keep backstabbing while under the effects of improved invisibility?
