gnarbrag: Important note:
In BGII:EE, ranger/clerics no longer get the full druid spell list added. You only get the spells a ranger could have gotten. (so no more iron skins)

F/T/M is very nice but even in ToB you'll never learn lvl9 spells
Man. You'd think that at some point they would run out of crap to dump on these old classics. Guess not.

Well, to be fair, it was an exploit.
Ranger spell slots should be used only for ranger spells and cleric spell slot should be used only for cleric spells. IWDII and ToEE implement this correctly but BG, BGII and IWD lump them together as divine spells.

In IWD with the expansion, the game actually *does* limit you to those druid spells that you would be able to cast at your current ranger level, though the spells do use the same slots as your cleric spells. (I think you only get your cleric spells, however.) The original version doesn't have Ironskins at all, but in IWD:EE, said character gets to use Ironskins at Ranger level 21 or 22, IIRC. (In the original, the level 5 Ranger spells would be available at that level.)

Also, apparently you *can* re-enable this in the Enhanced Editions. See the following thread:

kmonster: I recommend cheating again and readjusting your weapon profiencies. Put 5 stars into flails, the rest into dualwielding, do some easy stuff in town like the circus tent, pick up some NPCs then do Nalia's quest where you should be able to get a good flail +3. Weapon specialization does make a big difference.
Thanks for this. Wasn't really cheating though, just adjusting to mimic a full BG1 playthrough. The furthest I got in all my BG1 plays was right under Candlekeep, which I THINK was near the end ...

I do like the Flail idea as I've heard there are really good ones in BG2, but I also heard there are Longswords that are really good for undead. I suppose there must be an NPC I can recruit who specializes in that though (just got into that town and heard about the circus tent problem - haven't come across any NPCs yet ...

Anyway, if I put 5 into flails, that only leaves 1 point for dualwielding ... I'm guessing the rest of the points I get up to lvl 13 should be put there? I have no idea how many more points I will get ...

bevinator: Getting to 13 as a warrior-type class gets you an extra half attack each round. If you're switching to mage, though, it makes it take a PAINFULLY long time to get to reactivate those fighter abilities and it reduces the number of 9th level spells you can cast.

So it's good if you want your fighter/mage to be more melee-focused, but less good if you want them to be spell-focused. It's all personal choice, though.
Thanks. Yeah, I want to be more melee based and use defense spells like Stoneskin etc. Hell, my Kensai at lvl 8 is already badass, but then again I'm fighting early game enemies and dualing 2 pretty good longswords I found right at the beginning.

If I dual to mage at kensai 13, about how far through the game would I reach Mage 14? Halfway? I hope not near the end because that would suck.
I'm playing Neutral Evil and want to recruit a mostly evil team ... I'm really hoping Dorn, Kagain, and Edwin are in BG2 ...

You're a bit limited on the evil NPC front.
Dorn and Edwin are still recruitable. Kagain isn't but there's an evil Dwaft Fighter namen Korgan to replace him.
Other evil NPC's you can recruit are Viconia (cleric) and Hexxat (Thief)
ToB adds an NPC from BG (Fighter)

Neutral NPC's: Jaheira (Fighter/Druid), Anomen (Fighter/Cleric, can receive a Wis upgrade that turns him Good), Cernd (Druid), Heir'Dalis (Bard), Yoshimo (Thief), Neera (Wild mage), Wilson (Grizzly Bear)

I didn't know that about IWD but I'm assuming that's only possible in HoF

You get another proficiency point at fighter level 9 and 12. And after dualing at mage levels 1,6,12 to put into mage weapons. After dualing is complete you get the old proficiencies back, at level 18 and 24 you can points into fighter weapons again.
I ran with a Fighter/Mage/Thief for my most recent run of BG1(EE) and had a lot of fun, though I haven't gotten far enough with that character in BG2 to know how well that triple multiclass setup works at higher levels. You can roll an Elf with 19 DEX and hand them a composite longbow to compensate for the part where their ultra-slow leveling speed makes them super squishy for the first few hours.
