just wondering what you think is the best equipment for Khalid , mostly thinking of armor

i see he has high dex, so I suppose we probably don't want something like full plate... but i don't really know these old school AD&D rules because i didn't start playing these games until Neverwinter Nights, which uses different rules... and tbh I don't really feel like learning the new rules...

can someone just tell me what kind of armor i should be getting him?

and what armor for jaheira? i think in NWN druids couldn't wear metal armor or they lose spellcasting but i think i had her in some and she still seems functional in that respect
Give Jaheira and Khalid the best armour you can give them, whether it's leather, chain, or full plate. There's no dex penalty like there is in third edition or 3.5. Jahiera does not get any penalties to using metal armour. She can use her spells regardless of what you give her.

wow no dex penalty from armor...

doesn't that mean you pretty much always want full plate then? (i'm guessing full plate will nearly always confer most AC based on my experience with NWN... unless some other armor has a magical effect)

seems weird to put full plate armor on a ranger or something

"doesn't that mean you pretty much always want full plate then?"

I'd say give it to anyone you can. Keep in mind you need 15 strength to wear it. This means if you recruit Viconia or Branwen, they can't use it even though their class allows them to (gauntlets of ogre strength and strength potions fixes this issue). There are also class requirements. It can only be used by fighters, clerics, rangers, and paladins. So it won't be an option for all characters.

"seems weird to put full plate armor on a ranger or something"

I think the game encourages you to use medium armour on a ranger. Putting plate/heavy armour on a ranger disables their stealth. It also does this with thief skills if you equip the armour on a fighter/thief. I prefer equipping my rangers with leather armour for flavour. Icewind Dale 2 goes one step further and gives you a bonus feat for wearing light or medium armour.

I apologize if I made any errors in my reply. It's getting late as I'm typing this.

Edit: formatting.

Edit 2: whomever your front line tank is should probably get priority when equipping full plate mail.

Jaheira is not a Druid, she is a Fighter/ Druid and Khalid should be given a longbow unless you really need him to melee... if its very early in your game then Khalid shots them while Jaheira kites them around so her armour should be plate until you get to nashkel where a free 'Ankheg Armor' waits and Jaheira gets it unless you also have Viconia

in sort it doesn't matter what armour you give Khaild
While Khalid is lacking strength, his Dexterity + Constitution combination make him actually the best melee tank in the game from all the possible companions, so having the best possible armor + shield (and a long sword) on him is also quite nice option. I personally think he is one of the most underrated companions since he can be both an excellent tank and archer.
About best tank in BG1, thats Kagain. Having a character with Con 20 that slowly self heals over time is amazing in BG1. Unfortunately Kagain is evil.

Khalid is not that useful. I always trade him for Coran. This way I can still have a thief while Imoen is learning to be Mage.
While that 20 Con is awesome, the regeneration is too slow to matter during a combat. Apart from that Kagain is lacking in both Dexterity and Strength, so you probably need a second melee character to support him.

I don't know what it is about Khalid that most people think he is a weak character.
Kagain gets the most hitpoints and he doesnt need healing after the battle.

The rest can be fixed.

Khalid sucks because his morale is really low, and he panics when he gets damaged. Also he's kind of boring and not what I need at that point.
Your last sentence seems to be the main reason why you think Khalid is not useful - you don't like him. Because otherwise objectively speaking Khalid is probably the most versatile/useful warrior in BG1, and just to clarify he's not my favourite NPC. It just seems weird that with such stats people still consider him to be weak, but it looks like many players don't like him and I can understand that. I for example can't stand Edwin despite him being the most powerful arcane spellcaster in the game.

imo Neera gets that title, i mean sure Eddy has his ring but he also has an entire book he can't cast where as my half-elf besty can [try to] cast spells above her level or just identify items

p.s, the running away thing can be fixed but i u agree some people just don't like Khalid
No the main reason is there is simply better out there.

Minsc, Kivan, Coran, ... if you can somehow manage, despite being evil, Kagain.

I'm definitely primarily a powergamer, I keep up with people I dont like in many games simply because they're good.

Khalid is meh.

Kivan, Coran will not stick around as long and while Khaild rans away a lot at least he doesn't turn around and attack you like Minsc
like i said each to their own

The biggest issue with Coran is that you get him kind of late. But indeed, he is a powerhouse with a bow. Kivan is also amazing, and you can get him early. In the classic, you can recruit him almost immediately and he will stick with you through the whole game. In EE unfortunately they have added a timer so that Kivan leaves you after 7 days unless you get to the Bandit camp within that time frame. This most likely means that you will need to delay recruiting him till you are done with Nashel mines.
