First thing I would try is delete the contents of your BaldursGate\Cache folder.
If it's empty, or deleting the contents doesn't fix it, I would reinstall the game (somewhere other than the default C:\ProgramFiles(86)..........directory) ie C:\Games\BaldursGate.

i reinstalled my game and so far appears to have fixed the problem. thank you very much
I had a similar problem with baldur's gate an "assertion failed chdimm.cpp..." and i found that my issue was, that I renamed the folder holding the Easy Tutu version of the game. and when i changed it back, the game was able to find all it's files correctly.
I had the same problem.

Look in the install folder of the game for Baldur.ini. Edit the file and the second line for me was: HD0:=D:\Program Files\Black Isle\Baldur's Gate\
I changed that line to where my game was actually located and this fixed it.

Thank you so much. I had the same problem and couldn't figure it out. I always copy bg2 and mod the copy, so reinstall etc is easier. I just need to remember to change the path in the ini.

Thanks, you saved my game.

Some of your game patches must have gone missing that's why it causing the issues, make sure to keep in check, your patches and ensure the game is fully patched check and all of the files are there.

Windows 7 has a different folder for documents then moden Windows and the game defaults to documents as the place to store saves... its a know issue and the world has long since moved on
