Greetings

I would love to hear what do you fellow players think about the balance of racial traits and what are some of the best & strongest race (and subrace) trait synergies with the available classes & subclasses?

Thanks for sharing your experiences!
They changed a lot of the DnD rules i guess, and im not very familiar with 5th edition rules, earlier Dnd you had some races that gained bonus in certain stats that made them ideal for certain classes, not in BG3, you can be a dwarf sorcerer here with the same Charisma as any other race.
They only changed the passives like darkvision or movement, humans gain more skill prof and so on, so go crazy.

They are all pretty similar in strength, outside of the Githyanki. The Gith are overpowered, which is great, because their behavior and standing in the world matches their racial strength for role-playing purposes.

The Gith get misty step, psionic jump, & mage hand as racial spells. They also get medium armor and most sword proficiencies. But most importantly, they have astral knowledge; which is the best trait in my opinion. I only play with a party of 2-3 characters at a time -- so 5 extra skill proficiencies each day is unbelievably OP.

There is no generally agreed upon rating of races.

Depending upon who you ask, the especially strong choices are:

- Human - Great extras all around
- Elf - Great extras all around
- Drow - Great set all around, awesome weapon skills
- Half-Elf - Mix of human and elven goodies, but misses extra skill
- Halfling - Kickass special
- Gnome - Kickass special
- Half-Orc - Kickass specials, especially for warriors
- Githyanki - Nice extras
- Zariel Tiefling for Paladin
- Gold or Gray Dwarf

Dragonborn and Shield Dwarves are clearly underpowered, though,.

My personal favorite is Halfling. Note that Shadowheart can give any ally Advantage on Stealth for free.

Everyone can agree that Gith racial features are significantly stronger than humans, elves, half-elves, and dwarves. Probably better than all, but I have yet to try the rest. I don't see how it can be considered close?

I dont know why you think the Gith specials are so strong. They are certainly nice to have, but I'd rather for example have the Gnome saves or the uber Halfling Luck.

The Gith get the following:
- misty step
- psionic jump
- mage hand
- light & medium armor proficiency
- longsword & greatsword proficiency
- and most importantly, astral knowledge (4 free skill proficiencies)

How does 1 proficiency from Elves or Humans compare to the Gith's 4? Lae'zel has all of this by level 5; I haven't seen if she gets any other racial rewards beyond this point. And I cannot comment on Gnomes or Halflings, as I stated previously, because I have not played with them.

But my High Elf isn't getting anything close to the Gith's benefits. Dark vision for example is easily accessible throughout the game without the perk (spells, potions, items, lights). But the Gith's core benefits are not accessible in the slightest (into act 2 is as far as I have gone).

Err, I know what Gith get.

Its nice but no way it beats advantage on Charisma, Wisdom AND Intelligence saving throws.

Or a 3x multiplier on crit damage.

Or rerolling every attack, saving throw, or ability check that rolled 1.

None of what you just listed contradicts me. Elves, Humans, & Half-elves do not have those abilities. Did you read my post?

Also, you are contradicting yourself -- now you are stating that there is a generally agreed upon hierarchy of races, and that Gnomes & Halflings have superior abilities to Githyanki. And I am stating that Githyanki have clearly superior racial abilities relative to Elves, Half-elves, and Humans. So the hierarchy is there, and it can generally be agreed be upon.

But choices of race should be chosen based on role-playing desire, not strength. The Gith is clearly superior to my High Elf, but the role-playing would be a whole different game for me.

Sorry, I'm too chill for a flame war.

You love Gith, great, go play them.

A flame war? This is a discussion board (i.e place for discussing alternative perspectives). This particular board regards the comparison of racial strengths. Why come on here if you possess no desire to engage in public discourse?

Also, I do not love Gith. They don't suit my role playing style, but their racial abilities would be perfect for a warlock build.

Your post was completely riddled with flamewar tropes.

"you contradict yourself"

"you dont even check X"

Not interested in that.

I guess I don't understand what a flame war is. I said you contradicted yourself, because you did contradict yourself. It's difficult to have a discussion with someone contradicting their own statements, and especially difficult not to point it out.
