Hi, I am mostly a steam user but I am thinking to buy the game here because the refund politics are better in case that I dont like the game because I am not a big fan of the genre. That being said, I am curious if there is any downsides to buy it here when it comes to updates, controller support and features in general
Hey OP, we should be live and able to download the same time as steam. The main downside is that steam has much better servers than GOG, so download speeds will vary between platforms.

Steam will also have a lot more users downloading at the same time, so who knows which one will turn out to be faster for the majority of people!

If you're not a big fan, you should wait a couple of months before trying the game: it's not unusual for games of this complexity to require a few patches. Even if the first act of the game was thoroughly tested during EA, it will get new content too, and there are new races, classes, spells, and so on, that were not as much exposed as the EA.

However, if you buy after the release, you won't benefit from the Early Access price for the Deluxe Edition (EA buyers get the Deluxe Edition, which contains a few bonuses).

The disadvantage of GOG vs Steam is that patches are not always delivered (though I don't think we'll have this problem with Larian), and they're sometimes late and usually bigger. For example, I didn't have enough with 160 GB of disk in the first month after the EA release because some updates were as big as the game itself - and now the game will almost be twice that size.

Fortunately, Galaxy has been improved and you can select different disks for the downloaded files and the temporary folder where everything is put together, so if you don't have too much room on your SSD, this will help you. Steam doesn't have this feature. And you're not forced to update with GOG, which is another advantage.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot this: there will be drops on Twitch, if you're into that sort of things. The last time I had that with a GOG game (Expeditions: Rome), it wasn't working well with GOG. I consider that as negligible, though. A last difference is the achievements, which are usually different here (when they exist at all).

I read on PC Gamer it goes live at 8am PDT
It's live now! Restart the Gog Galaxy client to download.
There's no real downsides. If you insist on using offline installers there are sometimes delays on patches, but if you use the client (GOG Galaxy) there won't be.
