Hello,

since GOG didn't provide the latest patch via offline installer*, I patched it via Galaxy. Sadly after Galaxy appiled the patch the game won't start up any more. I had the same problem already on an other machine when I tried patching the EA9 to Release - first the game worked and after galaxy patched it, the installation didn't work.

I am not really inclined to download 100GB each time a new version shows up. So, anyone had this issue too and found a solution?

*But it is sooo wonderful that we have the EA and PAtch 9 still there - thanks GOG!

I've been looking to see if patches are showing up in the GOG offline but since the GOG launcher chains to the Larian launcher, it auto-patched the game to 4.whatever901 which I think is the latest anyway.

Dodda: patching the EA9 to Release
Larian Studios has explicitly said to uninstall the EA client entirely, before downloading and installing the Release client. Too much is different between the two for a mere patch.

Well, it was the version that Galaxy downloaded after GOG "released" BG3. Only after starting the game did I realize that it was the Patch9 version. Later, I checked the GOG website for the relase version and when I saw that to be available, I started Galaxy up again (hoping Galaxy would find the new version now). Galaxy did the patching of that Patch9 version (DL the whole game effectively yet again) automatically, so I assumed (haha, mistake, I know) that things were going as planned.

Since the game wouldn't start, I deleted everything and went for a clean install via Galaxy (dl-ing the game a third time -.-), which then worked. Yet the performace results on my Laptop (where I installed it first) were not so optimal, so I installed the full release version on my main computer - and here again, after patching via Galaxy to the new x901 version, I got the same "no-go" result as before on my other computer. So atm I am trying to figure out what went wrong.

I guess my path to starting BG3 wasn't very optimal, but GOG's performance in regards of providing the current files hasn't been very optimal either. Let alone updating the offline-installer files (the EA files are still lingering around and as of the time of this post the release version is still not updated).

Maybe I should have gone with Steam on this :(
There are many sources of errors on a PC - make sure your SSDs have the latest Firmware as the recent bunch of SSDs including even Samsungs EVO 870 that is already quite old will corrupt your files if they are large enough.

For me it only stopped when i updated to the latest Firmware which came way to late for my taste as i had months of errors i did not know from where they came bcs i trusted Samsung to release working hardware.

Since then the situation around SSDs and reliability of launch firmware has become worse...

GOG should support the offline version as same as the GOG Galaxy version. Otherwise I don't see any reasons to not buy the game in the Steam store.

Here is the link to Larian's web site where they explicitly state that you are required to remove EA as trying to patch EA to release version will break the game (and the release patch will also be the same size as the full release game so your not saving from downloading again)...

You would have had the same experience over at Steam: store.steampowered.com/news/app/1086940/view/3655285941429712390

You are soooo right :(
But in my case the SSD is definitely not it.

Yes, and I am not disputing that or ignoring it. As I stated before this happend accidentally, because GOG initially had the EA version released, and only later replaced it with the release version. I just assumed that it the Galaxy Patcher will know what to do with the files.
Nevertheless, the lock-up also happend later on a clean install that was patched to the x901 version.

My comment was referring to the way GOG handled the release/management of the installer files – and that could have definitely been smoother.

Also, the thread title needs to be amended. Since then I was able to run the game (by doing.... to be honest I don't know how that helped what I did – like deleting the launcher cache). But this lock-up still occurs totally randomly. I can start the game, then I close it and can't re-run it. Then, after like 2 hours I start it again and it runs again. So, while at first it seemed that this was related to Galaxy's patching (it was just coinciding with it), there is an other issue here. So, off to Larian's support.

I have similar problems - the game worked fine right after launch, but since the first hotfix it no longer starts via Galaxy. It does, however, run just fine when I start it by directly doubleclicking the Larian launcher. So apparently the two launchers don't play nice together, but the game installation itself is okay. Still an annoying issue.
Everything went well for me, Larian is connected with GOG-Galaxy and updating worked like a charm, the latest update was 300+MB and took only a moment to proceed.

Another source of trouble can be Antivirus-Software - i use Avast Free.

Also there is a bunch of Windows updates going on right now which can mess up other updates and your drivers big time.
