We aren't getting DLCs, expansions, or a sequel. They are moving away from D&D entirely. He's already working on Larian's next game, and said 'it's not what you think'.

If you are wondering why, I think this quote sums it up:

"We are not a company that's made to create DLCs or expansions. We tried that actually, a few times. It failed every single time. It's not our thing. Life is too short. Our ambitions are very large".

It looks like the next D&D game we are getting is a life sim game by Gameloft. Sounds pretty mid to me, but I probably shouldn't be too harsh on a game I haven't even seen yet.

Well, we already knew that BG3 wont get an expansion.

Thank god they dont do DLCs.

And we already knew that their next project will be science fiction. Thus it wont be BG4.



And they dont say they move away from D&D entirely or that there is no way they will ever consider BG4. They just for the moment want to do different things. They indeed may never return. But its not impossible.



In many ways BG3 is a very well rounded and in itself finished product anyway.

The only thing that annoys me is that we never get more than level 12. However they are working on a big patch that allows to mod the game. So we will be able to expand BG3 not only to level 20, but also to levels beyond, on our own.

So in theory we could expand BG3 even to a full simulation of all of Faerûn. The only question is if we can find enough fans who would be willing to do such a project, and enough cooperation, too.



About Larian and D&D in general, BG3 is clearly their best game because of the D&D rulesystem. It would be an enormous task to create a different rulesystem of compareable complexity and detail, yet compareably well balanced.

If any game is deserving of a DLC, it would be this one. DLCs aren't bad in and of themselves. My favourite one so far is the Citadel DLC from Mass Effect 3. I haven't played the Blood and Wine DLC from Witcher 3, but I've heard it was great.

I think somewhere down the line we'll get unofficial expansions. There was one for Fallout 4 (I forgot the name). And Beyond Skyrim.

Nope there is only one reason for DLCs instead of proper expansions and thats to bleed the gamer of every penny they have.

Sad news. :( Though not unexpected. Larian's kind of written themselves into a corner with regards to many of the endings, so creating an expansion or a sequel would be pretty difficult. They've also stated in the past that raising the level cap was something they were not keen to do because it would be really difficult to create/balance higher-level spells given what they're capable of doing. Still, I am quite surprised that they would completely rule out doing any DLC, expansions or BG4, given what a massive success BG3 was. Personally I was hoping that they'd set their sights even higher and tackle a project like Neverwinter Nights 3, with a full and comprehensive DM client and campaign creator, using everything they've learned from BG3, but the article said that Larian's moving away from D&D altogether for now, so that nixes that idea.

Still, BG3 is massive enough and with enough replayability that I imagine I'll be playing it for several years to come. With upcoming official mod support, who knows what the game might yet become?

Larian is not a dot the eyes and cross the T kind of company so moving on at a high point makes a lot sense for them

It's probably for the best Larian moves on to their next project. I'm still heartbroken, though. The story, characters, and world of BG3 are just so incredible. It would have been nice to get more of it.

BG1, BG2 and for that matter Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic are games I still play today, ca 20 years after release.

For example right now I'm playing a Toreador in VtMB with fanpatch plus 11.4.

So I dont see myself ever stopping playing BG3. And if they really give so much support to modding as they are promising, I might look into doing some myself. Though I dont expect to get very far due to the time constraints I have on my spare time.

Of course Larian did overall a nice job adding some details to it. Just like Bioware did with BG1 and BG2. Maybe a little less consistent with the setting than Bioware back in the day.

Larian has 2 projects in mind. And they have nothing to do with the D&D universe. However he also said that they never go back to Baldurs Gate. But that it was part of a larger plan that would dwarf all other RPG's. But that more work needs to be done to build a foundation, which started with Divinity: Original Sin. So not a BG4, but a game in the same universe. That's what i think.

Uh, I dont remember them saying they will NEVER get back to BG.

And even if they would actually say this - I would honestly not believe them.

As they say - predictions are hard, especially about the future.

They may not do BG4, or indeed any other BG content, but they may do more D&D in the future. Especially if the management changes etc.

Vincke mentioned in an interview that they had 2 other projects first which they wanted to finish. Then he mentioned a 3th project but vaguely, by saying that Divinuty and Baldurs gate where a base for a future project. So it's gonna be something in DD's universe. But i guess it will take 10 years.

KoTR and Bloodlines are both such great games.

BG3 and the DnD 5 ruleset in general, isn't my bag. I've played the opening trying to get into it so many times and from character creation on, it has been hard, so far, to get into.

The Bloodlines fan patch... I wonder if I have that installed? I will have to look to see. Maybe there is something new I haven't seen there.

@geromino -- just searched it out. Actually in May '24, they updated patch 11.5 with a ton of things.

Looks like I'll be playing this shortly.
