After the recent update, I'm not able to launch the game. I click play, it goes through the motions of loading, but then it crashes before I get to the main menu screen. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, cleared the cache, tried every suggestion I found, but it still crashes. I've tired using Direct X and Vulcan, and that doesn't matter. I've tried the 'repair' feature as well, but it doesn't do anything either. I've sent numerous crash reports for whatever good that does. I had mods with Vortex, and I deleted all the mods and Vortex itself as well just in case. I'm not computer literate enough to figure this out. Is this happening to anyone else? Any suggestions? I'd appreciate any help.

If I am reading your issue correctly, this is normal.

When you are using MODS, never update your game because the chance of the mods not working is about 99.99%.
You would have to wait for the mod makers to update their mods to work with Patch 7.

From what I understand, your save game file will include changes from your mods. Even if you uninstall your mods, the save game file is still looking for your mods. Especially mods that add custom items to the game.
With the patch 7 update to include modding to the game, who knows what changes were made.

If you can, I would revert to the version of the game before patch 7 and re-install the mods you had.
I don't know if this will solve your issue, but its something to try, if you haven't already tried it.

Hi, thanks for your input. I had deleted the game, all the mods, my save games, everything, so I'd basically have a 'clean' install, so there is no previous version. It still crashes. I click play, it starts to go through the load up, but it doesn't get to the main screen before it crashes

Ah! I see. Well in that case... it might be a system/software issue? maybe you need to update your video drivers?

edit: you can also try to make a shortcut to the bg3_dx11.exe or bg3.exe, bypassing the launchers to see if that is the issue. bg3_dx11.exe will run with directx and bg3.exe would be vulkan? Im guessing. in /baldurs gate 3/bin folder.

I had an issue where the new update would not even install, (stack and string range errors)

I formatted the drive and installed fresh copy of Windows, then installed BG3, everything works now, and I am not having any more CTD in-game.

Drastic measure, but effective.
I have the same issue currently. I previously had a save with mods enabled, and couldn't get into the menu. I completely nuked my Baldur's Gate 3 AppData directory and repaired my installation via Galaxy, still won't boot. All Win 11 drivers updated.

I was able to intermittently get it to load after reinstalling from scratch, but always seemed to crash after loading the game a 2nd time. Sometimes Vulkan or DX11 mode would work, but again after the 2nd boot it wouldn't again.

The only thing that's got me back into the game so far is downgrading to the latest hotfix patch before Patch 7. I'll be sticking with this for now until this is addressed.. :(
Reporting back because I think I've found something that works for me.

First, I rolled back to the last working version in GOG (essentially a full reinstall). Opened my existing save there, ensuring I had no mods installed. I used to have some mods, but I removed them and continued past the warnings. Loading into my save, I saved again, essentially creating a mod-free save.

Next, I exited and upgraded back to Patch 7.

In the meantime, I fired an email to Larian about these issues. They promptly responded with some FAQ tlinks, this is the most useful one: larian.com/support/faqs/crashing-upon-startup-pc_59

The piece of advice that FINALLY worked for me to get into the game and into my save on Patch 7 was this:

> Try right clicking and holding on the bg3_dx11.exe / bg3.exe executable, then hold Shift down, release the right mouse button and select Run as administrator, continuing to hold Shift until the splash screen comes up. Holding Shift prevents the game from taking focus when loading, and can avoid certain resolution or DirectX/Vulkan issues. Holding Shift when starting the game from the launcher may do the same thing.

Don't know how this works, but it did (for me)! Hope it helps someone else out.

because the data stored on your system is wrong and that forced it to reset... changing Larian launcher from DirectX/Vulkan for 1 boot does the same thing and tends to be less fucking around

causes are normally a change in screen resolution or Gpu driver issues
