Is there any squad setup that you find yourself falling back onto?

I tend to build around 2 archer squads. I make sure one has the archer volley just in case, and then I just upgrade to elite with fully upgraded command rings just to get ridiculous firepower.

1 pike squad is usually enough. I'll upgrade them last because they hold their own very well if they can get into position. Just in case they have to make an offensive move, I'll give them the first level charge.

I'd rather not use an infantry squad, but as defense against archers they're necessary.
1 infantry squad with warhammer
1 archer squad with bomb
1 pike squad with command ring
1 pike squad with war horn

The infantry squad is for tanking ranged attacks and for fast burst damage with either the cliff dive or the war hammer. Remember that if you slam an enemy into the water with the hammer it's instant death, even for brutes. The fact that infantry is fast and can attack on the move means you can get away with just one.

The archer squad is general artillery. I wouldn't go with two squads because shields become a much more common in the late game and a single rain of arrows can take care of massed groups.

Pikes are super powerful and useful when used right, but since you need to give them a chance to set up it's better to have multiple to cover simultaneous landings from opposite sides of the island. I use the command ring squad against large numbers of enemies to avoid being overwhelmed, and the war horn squad I use against riskier enemies like axethrowers. Try not to set up directly on the coastal square being attacked, the boat bounce can break up their spear readiness and leave them open to some avoidable deaths.

Elite Archer x2 both with Ring of Command, Infantry with Warhammer, Pikeman with Bomb/Warhorn and Charge. If I can't find a second ring of command I tend to use bomb on the second Archer unit and give the Pikeman a Warhorn. The archers bombard people and my melee units clean house. Very effective and simple, and a lot of fun imo.

I also really like Double Infantry (Elites, Plunge level 2 and Warhammer/bomb), Archers with ring of command, and pikeman with charge and warhorn

Yea, I get the same feeling with infantry, but on Normal mode, a typically sized pike squad (no ring) seems to do the trick even in the late game. I'll have to play more on hard mode and see what happens, but I did try a 2nd pike squad and occasionally found it useful to place one behind another if the first squad was whittled down too much. With the other pikemen in place, they could cover a retreat.

But man, like Jordan said, I just enjoy having a barrage of arrows fly out, and I even managed to beat Normal mode for the first time with two elite archer squads even though my last pike squad got wiped out by a stupid decision of mine only a few island prior. I think I had elite and vet infantry as my other two squads, which isn't terrible when the enemy arrows start flying.
Bought via Steam NO instructions, no clue how to get command ring, (havent seen yet) or other items mentioned.
