Apparently, there is an issue with background rendering when in-game cutscenes play, but there hasn't been any more feedback on that bug for several years now.
Sadly, the quicktime movies do not work with the stable version (1.6) of Wine, even if the installer of Quicktime doesn't report any errors.

I haven't tried with winetricks and the development version of Wine yet, but I think I'll postpone my attempts for a while.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. If it doesn't work in the 1.6.x builds, there's a fair chance it won't work in 1.7.x either. I really appreciate the fact that you tried!
Sorry if I'm dabbling in necromancy here, but I have some information that is relevant.
I'm not certain of how much use this is (I set it up in a PlayOnLinux Wine prefix, but have since deleted it and can't remember the settings), but six months ago or so, I was able to play it fine. The prominent issue that I remember was that the player's avatar was a bit buggy (no pun intended; a lot of white artifacts). The game ran smoothly, from what I remember. I watched the prophet(?) roach's cutscene, got past the spider at the very beginning, and then things happened and gaming fell from my priorities for quite a while.

I guess my point is: it does work in Wine with some tweaking--or at least it did at some point fairly recently. If anybody is still interested in this, I can try to recreate the POL prefix I'd set up.
i think it may no longer work
It does work, although a bit buggy in-game and no FMV (QT version from installer)

Tried on OSX 10.10.4 w/ latest wine 1.7.46, screenshots attached.
