Anyone have an idea how to find out what the current date is in Avernum 1? I've played this game several times, but never managed to get into the area that's date-dependent because I can't find it anywhere. :(

In Avernum 1, place and date are clearly visible in the middle of the screen, under the display window.
Take a look at the attached screenshot: as you can see, the place is "Fort Avernum" and the date is "Remembrance 6, Year 817".

Thank you! I actually didn't have that on my screen (no wonder I couldn't find it). Turns out a couple of the data files were corrupted, and now I've verified them I can see the date. :)
